BUCKLAND — Boosted by several top finishes, the Mahar Regional School girls track and field team placed fourth overall at the WMass Div. 2 Championships at Mohawk Trail Regional High School Friday night.
Sienna Moore won the pole vault for Mahar with a vault of 9 feet, 6 inches.
“I was really close to 10,” Moore said. “I was a foot over it but I looked at the bar.”
The announcer echoed the freshman’s name throughout the complex as the winner. Moore will compete next at the Central/West Division 2 championships.
“It felt really good,” Moore said. “I was seeded first, but someone else could have pulled out something.”
Meghan Davis (11:18.53) won the two-mile without much resistance for Mohawk as the Warriors placed seventh overall.
“I took it like I take any other race,” Davis said. “Throughout the year we have focused on shorter speed stuff and save the two-mile for the championship. I am definitely looking to cut that time once I get people I can hang with.”
Davis’ blistering pace was a full 25 seconds ahead of second place. But for Davis there is still much to improve headed to the Central/West tournament.
“I think I did well,” Davis said. “I am definitely still trying to work on the middle mile. The splits there have been a little bit slower. It’s kind of difficult when I am all by myself.”
Davis was the recipient of the Vincent Falardeau Award for excellence in athletics, sportsmanship academic achievement, service to school and community.
“I wasn’t expecting it at all,” Davis said. “It was an honor just to be nominated. I was over the moon. It was awesome.”
Greenfield’s Kacia Kinsmith was the third and final local winner on the day as she won the javelin with a toss of 102 feet, 8 inches. Reilly Isler took third (99-2) in the javelin for Frontier, followed by Paige Loughman (98-10) from Pioneer in fourth.
In the one-mile, Mahar seventh-grader Carra Fitzgerald placed second (5:29.59) in front of Davis who was making a charge behind her at the finish line.
“I was getting kind of freaked out,” Fitzgerald said. “They were all screaming ‘go catch her’ and I was trying to not let her catch me. There’s a lot of people. I was surprised how many people there were here.”
Fitzgerald also scored an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter run (2:32.69). The Senators got a nice showing in the discus, with Chloe Taddeo placing fourth (90-11) and Madison Harrington finishing sixth (86-6). Turners Falls’ Dabney Rollins placed fifth in the event at 86-11.
Kamryn Reilly was fifth (13.33) in the 100-meter dash, and tied for sixth in the high jump (4-9) for the Senators.
Victoria Marin placed seventh (16.94) in the 100-meter hurdles as well as fourth (16-03.25) in the long jump for Greenfield.
Marin was part of the sixth place tie in the high jump.
In her first ever postseason meet, Athol’s Geca Baptista placed 15th (76-4) in the javelin.
Delaney Parker secured a fourth place finish (27.39) in the 200-meter dash. Parker also got a personal record in the triple jump (34-3), finishing third.
Marisela Ackerman of Frontier Regional took sixth in the 400-meter (64.27).
Jazmyn Vautour placed fifth (30-2½) in the shot put for Mahar.
South Hadley High School won the overall team competition with 116 points.
Greenfield and Frontier tied for 10th with 19 points, Pioneer and Turners Falls tied for 20th with five points.
Mahar’s 4×800 team got a seventh place finish (4:33.82).
