Nola Bloomer came on in relief and righted the ship, helping visiting Mohawk move above the .500 mark behind a 10-6 victory over Pioneer in a Franklin County League affair played Monday in Northfield.
With the visiting Warriors (7-6 overall, 2-5 FCL) trailing 5-2 after one inning, Bloomer came on and struck out six batters over the final six frames, allowing just one run in the sixth the rest of the way.
The Panthers pushed five across in the first inning, turning a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 advantage. They would stay in front until the fourth, when Mohawk scored four runs to jump ahead, 6-5. The Warriors tacked on one run apiece in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to seal the deal.
Mya Lesieur paced the Mohawk offense with a three-hit day, including a double. Reagan Dupree had two hits, including a double, and both players registered RBIs. Isis Moon and Ashley Reynolds each had a hit and a pair of RBIs, while Grace Ward doubled and drove in a run to aid the cause.
Pioneer (2-8, 1-6) was plagued by five errors. Steph Scoville had two hits, including a double, and an RBI, and struck out 11 batters in a complete-game effort in the circle. Hayley Pelletier doubled and drove in two runs for the Panthers, while Charlotte Kahler had a hit and an RBI.
• Pioneer’s JV team received eight strikeouts in the circle as well as a two-run double from Julia Kovalsick in a 24-6 rout of Mohawk, Monday.
Erin Kimball had two singles to go with a three-run double, while Jaida Barry, Sofia Holden and Katie Trudeau all added hits.
Pioneer’s Middle School team also picked up a 15-3 win.
Hopkins 21, FC Tech 1 — Visiting Hopkins Academy wasted little time taking control of Monday’s independent softball game in the Powertown.
The Golden Hawks pushed 10 runs across in the top of the first inning, taking advantage of double-digit walks from Franklin County Technical School pitching, and Hopkins cruised from there en route to a 21-1 victory in a five-inning run-shortened contest at Nancy Gifford Field.
The lead grew to 18-0 thanks to an eight-spot in the top of the second, before Franklin Tech (4-9) scored its lone run in the bottom of the frame. Kelsey Winship recorded the RBI, and she had one of four hits for the Eagles along with Jennie Currier, Brianna Snyder and Mackenzie Martel.
Abi Corey, Currier and Martel combined in the pitching circle for Franklin Tech. The team was hampered by a combined 25 walks.
Franklin Tech looks to bounce back in Tri-County League play this afternoon with a home game against Gateway.
Greenfield 15, Athol 2 (5) — One game removed from a lopsided defeat at the hands of rival Turners Falls, Greenfield High School was in desperate need of a palate cleanser, Monday.
The visiting Green Wave scored multiple runs in every inning, racking up 13 hits in the process, and slugged their way to a much-needed 15-2 victory over Athol in FCL action.
“This was exactly how we needed to respond,” Greenfield coach Rian Lovett said of her team’s performance following the 14-1 loss to Turners just four days earlier.
Audrey Bresciano smacked three hits, including a triple, and drove in two runs to pace Greenfield, which qualified for the postseason thanks to the victory. The Wave improved to 9-2 overall, 7-1 in the FCL.
Raegan Hickey had two hits and an RBI, and Hannah Marchefka also had a pair of singles. Rachel Dodge doubled and drove in two runs, and Nikki Miner had a single and two RBIs.
Athol (5-6, 2-6) scored both of its runs in the second inning. Jenna St. Cyr and Lexi Forte had the team’s two hits, with Forte driving in a run.
Greenfield senior Olivia Joy struck out six and walked one in a five-inning complete game. Lindsey LeBlanc struck out three and walked four to take the loss for the Raiders.
Both teams are back in action on Wednesday. Greenfield travels to play a night game at Pioneer (6 p.m.) while Athol travels to play an independent road contest against Taconic (5 p.m.).
Mahar 18, Putnam 5 (6) — Few hitters in the Franklin County League are capable of the type of outing Skylar Dodge put together on Monday.
The Mahar first baseman smacked a three-run home run in the third inning and belted two more bombs as part of an eight-run sixth frame. Her three round-trippers and five RBIs propelled the host Senators to an 18-5 win in six innings against Putnam in an independent tilt played in Orange.
Sarah Graeff (three-run in the first) and Jordan Fournier (two-run in the third) also hit home runs for Mahar (6-7), which scored in every inning but the second. The Senators finished with 17 hits.
Jordyn Berry was 3-for-5 with a double, while Alexis Mainville-Schaefer also had three hits and an RBI. Lani DeDiego and Fournier notched two hits each.
Sophomore Hailee Meeker went all six innings for the Senators, striking out 12 and walking four to earn the victory. The hosts led 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth, but closed well with 10 unanswered runs to pull the game to a run-shortened end.
