Jared Jacobs tossed seven strong innings, and his Mohawk Trail Regional High School offense supported him with four runs in the bottom of the first inning en route to a solid 6-1 win over Pathfinder in an independent baseball game played in wet Buckland, Monday.
Jacobs struck out six, walked just two and scattered six hits in the complete-game effort for the Warriors (4-8). At the plate, he drove in three runs, including a two-run single as part of the four-run opening stanza.
Tyler Dubreuil got the first-inning rally started, reaching on an error, and he came around on a Jackson Hicks RBI single to make it 1-0. Reuben Bassett followed with a run-scoring double, and three batters later, Jacobs’ flare down the right-field line plated both Bassett and Brian Gagnon to make it 4-0.
That would be more than enough for Jacobs on the mound. Pathfinder got its lone run in the top of the second, but the Pioneers were held off the board the rest of the way.
Freshman catcher Aidan Drury helped his pitcher, throwing out several would-be base stealers in the victory.
Mahar 8, Commerce 7 — A combined eight errors and 11 walks made for a funky game in Orange, Monday.
Host Mahar scored four runs both the first and sixth innings, and held off a seventh-inning comeback bid from Commerce to pluck a much-needed 8-7 independent victory.
The Senators moved back to the .500 mark at 6-6 overall with the win.
The home team managed just three hits in total, with Charlie Barnes, Andrew Herk and Logan Dodge all contributing singles. But thanks in part to five Commerce errors, Mahar stormed out to a 4-0 lead after one inning.
The visiting Red Raiders cut the deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, but four more Mahar runs provided some breathing room and an 8-3 lead.
The top of the seventh didn’t go smoothly however. Commerce rallied with a four-spot of its own, but reliever Barnes shut the door and managed to get the final out to secure the win for starter Liam O’Donnell (6ip, 5k, 5bb).
Herk drove in a run for Mahar, as did Joey Brozell, Todd Chiasson and Jacob Berry.
Chicopee Comp 3, Athol 0 — Postseason-bound Chicopee Comp proved to be quite a handful on its home floor, Monday.
The Colts got better as the match progressed, sweeping visiting Athol, 25-14, 25-10, 25-9, in an independent boys volleyball match in Chicopee.
Zach Aldrich had a team-high seven kills for the Red Raiders, which fell to 5-9 overall with the loss. Colby Soltysik and Parker Deleo added two kills apiece.
Soltysik registered nine assists and a pair of aces. Matt Willhite amassed five digs, while Owen Willhite and Aldrich tied for the team lead with six digs.
