To the surprise of no one, senior Meghan Davis showed well against the best in the state, Saturday.
The Mohawk Trail Regional High School standout ran to a third-place finish in the 2-mile at the MSTCA Coaches Invitational at Sharon High School. Davis posted a time of 11 minutes, 18.53 seconds, putting her behind only two runners in the 29-person field.
Natick’s Grace Connolly took first place in the 2-mile, posting a meet-record time of 10:25.93, while Silver Lake’s Summer Bejarano was a distant runner-up in 11:12.02.
Mohawk freshman Erica Szewczyk earned a top 10 finish in the 1-mile, as her time of 5:49.87 had her an impressive 10th in the competitive field.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Mohawk sophomore Cullen Brown ran to a 20th-place finish (1:01.28), with teammate Guy Rice-Lesure just behind in 25th place (1:01.89).
Freshman Max Gilmore led the way for the Mahar Regional School contingent, Saturday.
Gilmore took first place in the adapted 100-meter dash, posting a time of 26.43 seconds to lead the Senators in their trip to the Coaches Invitational.
Seventh-grader Carra Fitzgerald ran well in her first trip to the 43rd annual event. She crossed the line in 14th place overall in the 1-mile with a time of 5 minutes, 22.58 seconds.
Junior Kamryn Reilly’s best finish came in the long jump, where she was 16th overall with a top leap of 15 feet, 11 inches. Senior Anna Wetherbee wasn’t far behind in the event, scoring a 29th-place finish (15-2½).
Junior Riley Drew had the best individual finish of any Mahar athlete on the boys side. Drew’s leap of 19 feet, 1¼ inches in the long jump was good enough for a 26th-place performance.
Georgitsa, Ivancev at tennis individuals
After earning a first-round default victory, Greenfield’s Lilya Georgitsa saw her Western Mass. Individuals tournament run come to an end in the Round of 16, Saturday. The ninth-seeded player in the field, Georgitsa dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to eighth-seeded Madeline VonRuden of Mt. Everett in the event played at Longmeadow’s Bliss Tennis Courts.
Greenfield’s Victor Ivancev also competed for the Green Wave, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision in the opening round.
Junior Nathan Patterson of Conway earned a top 20 showing at the NCAA Division 2 Atlantic/East Regionals over the weekend, helping his Franklin Pierce University golf team compete in the event held at Totteridge Golf Club in Greensburg, Penn.
Patterson tied for 17th place with a three-round total of 11-over 227. He fired the Ravens low round of the regional on Thursday with a 1-under 71, and he tallied 11 birdies in total, the fourth most in the field.
Franklin Pierce tied for sixth place as a team. Southern New Hampshire University took the regional title, with Bentley finishing second and Wilmington University taking third.
Spring Member ABCD
The team of Chuck Yetter, Ernie Patnode, Gail Miller and Jon Unaitis posted a two-round total of 21-under 123 to top the field at the weekend Spring Member ABCD at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Three teams tied for second at 19-under (125).
Deerfield results
The Deerfield Academy girls water polo team closed out its 2019 season with back-to-back victories, holding off Hopkin (7-3) and Andover (16-5) in action on Saturday.
The DA boys lacrosse team earned a nifty 9-3 win over Avon, while both tennis teams cruised to victory with the boys blanking Exeter (7-0) and the girls team knocking off Choate (7-2).
In girls rowing, the Big Green defeated Middlesex and Nobles, with the first boat securing a first-place finish. The boys rowing team also swept wins, with all five of DA’s boats scoring wins.
The baseball team dropped a doubleheader to Andover (17-2, 18-1) and the softball team was beaten by Andover (15-1).
