I want to extend a very grateful “thank you” to the folks who assisted in my rescue on Shelburne Falls Road on Saturday, April 27. Riding a bicycle down Shelburne Falls Road, at 25 mph I misjudged a turn, went off the road, hit an embankment, and landed in a ditch 12 feet from the point of impact. Although in excruciating pain and unable able to see many faces that helped me, I never lost consciousness and was well aware of my surroundings.
I wish I had the names to thank each person but I am sure you know who you are and I want you to know I am very grateful. Although in a rolled-up position due to the pain, I remember: a gentlemen calling 911; the lady going to her car to get a blanket; seeing a town police vehicle (probably Conway); being told a fire department officer was on the scene; my cycling friend telling me six people were looking for (and found) my glasses; the ambulance driver and attendants who transported me to the Baystate Trauma Center; and I especially remember the EMS person (wearing a “Cornell” shirt) who thoroughly and expertly checked me for life-threatening injuries, put me in a neck brace, and deadlifted me by the armpits onto the transfer board. I broke six ribs (two in two places) and spent two nights in Baystate for observation.
It’s been 10 days and I am doing better than my follow up physician expected but this is much to do with the exceptional goodwill by the folks who helped at the scene. Again, I wish I could thank each of you individually. I hope that one or more of you see this letter and pass it around to the others.
