The Mohawk Youth League will open its 2019 baseball season on Saturday.
The league will kick things off with a parade, beginning at Greenfield Savings Bank in Shelburne, at 1 p.m. The parade will head over the Iron Bridge and down to Cricket Field in Buckland. The rest of the day will feature games all over the Mohawk district in four levels of play (T-Ball, Rookie, Minors and Majors).
Frontier Cal Ripken
Brayden McDonough registered a hit and drove in two runs, but Yankee Candle fell to Hampshire County Sheriff’s Office, 6-3, in a Frontier Cal Ripken 50/70 baseball game played Wednesday night.
CJ Hannum, Dylan Camp and Thomas Unkles all scored runs for Yankee Candle, which received two innings (two strikeouts) on the mound from starting pitcher Mason Thornton.
Great Falls M.S. wins
Alex Sulda struck out nine to earn the win on the mound and notched two hits and two RBIs to help Great Falls Middle School thump Smith Academy, 7-1, Wednesday.
Brady Booska also totaled two hits in the win for Great Falls, with Logan Addison adding a hit and pacing the defensive effort with a big day in center field.
GGSL
Eva Ferreira totaled two hits and two RBIs, and Pipione’s Sport Shop opened its Greenfield Girls Softball League slate with a 12-5 victory over Gilmore & Farrell in a Ponytail Division contest Wednesday night at Murphy Park.
Cordelia Guerin doubled and drove in two runs for Pipione’s, which also received a hit and two RBIs from Sophia Pinardi. Anna Bucala singled, drove in a run and struck out eight batters during a strong relief stint in the pitching circle. Margarette Howland was the winning pitcher, striking out five on the night.
Gilmore & Farrell’s Ellis Benitez struck out eight in three innings of pitching, and also had a hit and an RBI at the plate. Shylan Luippold registered a hit and an RBI, and Grace Laurie started the game and threw two innings.
Thomas Ladies League
The quartet of Sally Malloy, Barb Howey, Joanne McGowen and Cynthia Marchand posted a score of 37,, leading the way as the Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club’s Wednesday Night Ladies League kicked off with a Start-Up Scramble.
Donna Mowry registered the closest to the pin on No. 7 at 5 feet, 3 inches.
Deerfield results
For the first time in nine years, the Deerfield Academy girls tennis team knocked off Andover, Wednesday, as the Big Green snagged a 5-4 victory to highlight a busy day in competition on the prep level.
The golf team swept a tri-meet with Hotchkiss and Berkshire, posting a score of 375 to easily handle their competitors.
Elsewhere, boys tennis blanked NMH, 7-0, while the lacrosse teams swept the competition with the girls team beating Williston (15-3) and the boys team knocking off Loomis (13-6).
The Big Green edged Choate, 8-7, on the baseball diamond, while the softball team fell on the road at Ethel Walker, 18-3.
The girls water polo team fell to Choate, 12-4, while the ultimate team nipped Amherst, 10-9.
NMH golf
Luke Lonergan finished fifth overall with a 4-over round of 76, helping Northfield Mount Hermon take third out of 10 teams at the Suffield Invitational Golf Tournament, Wednesday.
The Hoggers amassed a total of 325. Mike Dunderdale and Thomas Zhang each shot 79. Avon Old Farms won the event, with Westminster taking second.
