GREENFIELD — Join the Greenfield Tree Committee, tree warden and DPW staff, Franklin Land Trust, and Greenfield officials and residents to celebrate National Arbor Day on Friday at noon in front of the Greenfield Post Office.
Roll up your sleeves and help plant a shade tree, hear the official Arbor Day Proclamation, and learn how you can get a tree planted in your front yard or tree belt for free. Take home free tree-related stickers, note pads, fun temporary tattoos and other giveaways.
National Arbor Day is a holiday that celebrates the role of trees in our lives and promotes tree planting and care. Trees are well worth celebrating because they are essential for clean air and clean water, and they provide habitat for birds and wildlife. Trees cool our neighborhoods by shading roadways and sidewalks that absorb and radiate heat during the hot summer months. Trees are even shown to improve mental wellbeing and reduce stress.
Greenfield’s Arbor Day Celebration will kick off a larger tree planting project in Greenfield made possible by a grant from the U.S. Forest Service in partnership with the Franklin Land Trust, state Department of Conservation and Recreation, Greenfield Tree Committee and Greenfield Department of Public Works. Thanks to this grant, Greenfield will plant 800 trees along downtown streets and in neighborhoods in the next three years.
“Planting a tree is something we can all do to fight against climate change,” says Melissa Patterson, director of community outreach and education at Franklin land Trust. “It can be easy to feel overwhelmed in the face of extreme weather events, rising temperatures and an uncertain future, but this project offers Greenfield residents an opportunity to make a positive and meaningful difference.” Contact the Greenfield Tree Committee to learn how you can get involved.
