NORTHFIELD — The former site of the pool at the Northfield Golf Club is being turned into a pavilion for performances and social events, and could be ready by the end of summer.
The new pavilion will be similar to the one the club already has near its clubhouse, Manager Shelby Snow said. Having a second one will allow the club to host social events while the area around the club house is being used by golfers, she said.
The Northfield Golf Club’s pool was closed for good before the beginning of the season last year. The snow family was not able to make the pool financially viable in the four years since buying the golf club, Shelby Snow wrote on the club’s website last April.
“At the end of the last season (2017) we realized it just wasn’t going to be a long-term thing,” Snow said last June.
The pool was built in 1957, and maintaining it and keeping it to code had become too expensive, Snow said at the time. Efforts to attract more customers via a lower membership rate and renovations to the concession stand were ultimately not enough to break even.
The pool was filled in last May, and within a month was converted to a picnic area with a tent for shade.
Now the golf club is working with an architect and a contractor, and expects construction on the new pavilion to happen this spring or summer, Snow said. The concession stand will stay open.
The hope is to host music and social events at the new pavilion, Snow said, but the club has not made any plans to use it this fall, in case construction isn’t finished yet.
