Former Turners Falls High School pitcher and Gill native Mackenzie Phillips was named New England Women’s & Men’s Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week for her performance at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
Phillips won three games for the Engineers, not issuing a walk in 16 innings. After striking out seven in a win over Amherst, Phillips came back the next day and struck out four in a win over Wheaton. She concluded her week by striking out three more in three innings of work in a win over the Lyons.
Thomas women’s league meeting
The Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls is holding a meeting for its Wednesday night women’s league on April 17.
The meeting is set for 6 p.m. at the clubhouse. Anyone interested in playing and finding out more about this fun league are invited to attend.
Union 38 field hockey
Union 38 field hockey will hold an introductory spring clinic for girls in grades 3-6 from the towns of Deerfield, Whately, Sunderland and Conway. Frontier Regional School head coach Missy Mahar will sponsor a three-day clinic on April 28, May 5 and 12.
The focus will be on skill development with a variety of drills and learning scenarios. Field hockey sticks, balls and shinguards will be provided to the first 35 girls who register. Players are asked to bring a mouth guard and a water bottle.
The clinic will run from 4-5 p.m. on those three Sundays at the Frontier Regional School field hockey field. Registration is $20 ($50 equipment deposit), and equipment pick up is April 28 at Frontier.
