ORANGE — Deb Habib says Seeds of Solidarity Farm and Education Center has always hoped and intended to pass forward many of the things it does to the area’s youth.
For the past 20 years, Seeds of Solidarity has run a popular program for teens, nationally recognized as an exemplary creative youth development program. Two years ago, it launched Craft Your Own Life, a four-day mini internship with a similar focus on growing food and building skills, but also with time for “contemplative activities” like yoga, conversations and meditation, the center’s co-owner said.
“We love the energy that young people bring to our farm,” Habib said. “Craft Your Own Life is a great blend of practical skills, along with support for their ideas and life vision in order to stay engaged in disruptive times and live their lives with joy and meaning, all in a peaceful, restorative setting. Plus, it is a great resume builder.”
Youths from throughout western and central Massachusetts may apply. Sessions are June 10 through 13 for ages 20 to 24, and Aug. 5 through 8 for ages 15 to 19. Both sessions run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.
One of the experiential projects will include learning about construction and renewable energy, while building a solar charging station for an electric car.
Habib said the program is looking for “mature young people who will bring an open mind, enthusiasm, respect and commitment to the program.” For application details, visit: bit.ly/2UdRWjr
Applications received by May 1 will be given priority. Group size is limited. Grants from Common Good Greenfield, Greenfield Cooperative Farmers Exchange and individuals to make the program free. Habib said the center would appreciate participants or their families contributing something to help cover the cost of food, but no one will be turned away for their inability to pay.
