GILL — A barn was destroyed in a fire at 148 North Cross Road Wednesday afternoon. No one was hurt.
The barn was fully in flames when the Gill Fire Department got the call just before 2 p.m., said Turners Falls Fire Chief John Zellmann. Firefighters reported hearing an explosion but didn’t know its cause.
By 2:30 the fire was under control, Zellmann said, although firefighters were still attacking hot spots in the barn and in the two acres of brush north of the building.
The house on the property was not affected by the fire. Ron Rickard, one of the residents, came out to watch the firefighters, but declined to comment.
The cause of the fire is under investigation, Gill Fire Chief Gene Beaubien said.
Also responding with the Gill and Turners Falls departments were Bernardston, Northfield, Erving, Greenfield, Deerfield and Shelburne Central.
