Meghan Davis wrapped up her high school indoor track & field career on Friday by doing something she has never done before.

Running a 5K on an indoor track.

The Mohawk Trail Regional High School senior finished eighth in the event during the New Balance National Indoor Track & Field championships at the Armory in New York City.

Davis finished the 5,000-meter run in 18 minutes, 1.71 seconds for an eighth-place finish in the field of 25 runners, which included athletes from as far away as Michigan, Virginia and Tennessee.

Noelle Adriaens of Brighton, Mich. won the race in 17:11.47, while Grace Nolan of Clarkston, Mich. was second in 17:15.06.

Amherst Regional High School senior Sophia Jacobs-Townsley was the only other runner from Massachusetts in the race and she had a great showing, finishing third in 17:19.15. After the race, Jacobs-Townsley and Davis embraced, and Jacobs-Townsley had kind words for her regional running mate.

“I’m so proud of Meghan,” she said. “She’s very consistent and puts everything out there. She runs well and did really well.”

Minutemen win slugfest

The UMass baseball team weathered a late charge from UT Rio Grande Valley as the Minutemen wrapped up a weekend series with a 14-11 win on Sunday afternoon at the UTRGV Baseball Stadium. The result ends a three-game slide for the Maroon and White, which improve to 4-3.

UMass exploded for 14 runs on 13 hits, both season- highs, with all nine Minutemen in the batting order collecting at least one hit. Four players in senior Logan Greene, junior Nolan Kessinger, redshirt freshman Collin Shapiro and redshirt sophomore Anthony Videtto all had multi-hit performances at the plate and Greene (5), Shapiro (2) and Videtto (3) plus redshirt sophomore Connor Smith (4) contributed multiple RBIs in the win.

Smith’s day included the first grand slam of his career and Greene clubbed a three-run homer, his first of the 2019 campaign.

UM softball edged

UMass jumped out to a 4-0 lead over Western Michigan on Sunday morning in the final game of the USF-Clearwater Parks and Recreation Showcase, but fell short in extra innings 6-5.

Kaitlyn Stavinoha led the UMass offensive attack with three hits in four trips to the plate to bring her average on the season to a team-leading .410 to go along with a .721 slugging-percentage. Stavinoha started things off by following an Erin Stacevicz single with one of her own to put two runners before a Hannah Bunker single loaded the bases, leading to a pair of RBIs from Madison Gimpl and Melissa Garcia on two free passes to first.

UMass extended its lead to four runs in its next trip to the plate as Stavinoha’s second hit was a RBI triple that scored Jackie Kelley. Bunker followed with her second of two hits, picking up her fifth RBI of the season with a single through the left side.

Western Michigan scored a single run in both the third and fifth innings to pull within two before coming within a run on a RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning. A solo home run to center field with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning tied it up at 4-4 and sent it to extras.

The Minutewomen brought home the international tiebreak run in the top of the eighth inning to go ahead 5-4 as Kelley drove in a pinch-running Kristina Day from third on a fielder’s choice before two consecutive outs left a pair of runners stranded. Kelley finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate while Stacevicz added a pair of hits for a UMass team that finished with nine to go along with three multi-hit performers.

The Broncos scored the game-winning runs on a single to right field, bringing in the sixth and final run to win on an obstruction call at the plate.

UM lax wins

Fourteen Minutemen had at least one point, Sean Sconone made 10 saves and the defense held NJIT scoreless for 21 minutes, 35 seconds consecutively as the UMass men’s lacrosse team downed the Highlanders, 19-7, at Rutgers-Newark’s Alumni Field on Saturday.

Sophomore attack Chris Connolly led Massachusetts (3-3 overall) with six points on a goal and five assists. Freshman attack Gabriel Procyk added five points on four goals and an assist while junior attack Devin Spencer scored four times as well.

Sophomore midfielder Kevin Tobin and junior position-mate Jeff Trainor added two goals and an assist each. Eight additional players had a point, including the first collegiate goals for freshmen Matt Baugher, Jack Geiger, Tim Hoynes and Alex Shuster, and first assist and point for senior Nick Roy.

Sconone had 10 saves in the win. Connolly, Isaac Paparo, Jackson Suboch and Tobin all had two caused turnovers.
