Behind a big offensive performance from Maverick Ward, Greenfield will have a chance to defend its Suburban League Green-Blue Division Tournament Championship this weekend.
Ward scored 21 points, and Greenfield edged Frontier, 41-35, in a grades 7 and 8 boys basketball semifinal Wednesday at Nichols Gymnasium in Greenfield.
The score was knotted 18-18 at halftime. Khalil Brown and Ryan Pulizari added 7 and 6 points respectively, as Greenfield shot just 5-for-23 from the free throw line but still advanced to Saturday’s title game. The team will play against either Belchertown or Easthampton in a game to be played at Westfield Middle School.
Dan Fellows led Frontier with 12 points and Ty Sadowski added 10.
Greenfield Lakers go 6-1
Gavin Arsenault scored a combined 95 points in seven games, helping the Greenfield Lakers grades 3 and 4 recreation basketball team post a 6-1 record in the Hinsdale Invitational Tournament last weekend.
The team won the event, defeating host Hinsdale in two championship games on the final day after losing by a point to the squad earlier in the event.
Grayson Thomas added 49 points in total, while Davian Bala tossed in 21. Bodie Burke scored 11 points, Jaziah Marrero added 6, and the trio of Jaxon Silva, Landen Benz and Desean Carter all added hoops. D’Angelo Brown, Johnny McIntyre, Nick Prasol and Henry Rollins all played hard throughout the tournament.
Newt Guilbault signups
Sign-ups for the Newt Guilbault Community Baseball League will be held Saturday from 9:30-11 a.m. at the Turners Falls High School gymnasium.
Leagues offered are a travel team for players ages 6-8, as well as 9-12 year old majors.
All new players need to provide a copy of their birth certificats. Tryouts immediately follow sign-ups, so players need a baseball glove. The registration fee is $75, and $50 for each additional sibling.

Registrations for the 2019 Greenfield Minor League baseball season will take place Saturday and again on March 16 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. upstairs at the Greenfield Elks Lodge.

GGSL signups
The Greenfield Girls Softball League will hold registrations for the upcoming season on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at the Elks Lodge of Greenfield.
The league is open to all girls, not just those living in Greenfield. There will be an additional registration period on March 16 from 9 a.m. until noon also at the Elks Lodge of Greenfield.
