Erika Looman’s 16th place individual finish, with a time of 34:55, helped propel the Mohawk Trail Regional High School girls’ skiing team to an eighth-place finish at the MIAA Nordic State Championship, Tuesday at the Notchview Reservation in Windsor.

Mohawk had six girls competing in the event, with Lilliana Manley (38:44) and Katarzyna Wisnauckas (38:53) finishing back-to-back of each other, taking 36th and 37th place, respectively.

Mae Rice-Lesure followed close behind with a time of 39:42 that was good for 43rd place. Brooke Looman took 82nd after finishing in 46:59, and Kala Garrido follow close behind, taking 83rd with a finish of 47:24.

The Mohawk boys team had four skiers compete, taking 15th as a team.

Guy Rice-Lesure led the pack for Mohawk, finishing a team-best 32nd with a time of 30:50. Vincent Gauthier had the second best time on the team, racing in at 41:08 for 93rd, followed by Daniel Tetreault in 98th place at 45:06, and Marti Llado Rivera in 101st with a finish of 47:58.

Youth basketball

KOC Hoop Shoot

Several area youth basketball players will take part in the Knights of Columbus Western Mass. Free Throw Championship in West Springfield after winning their district shoot at the Greenfield YMCA recently.

In the 9-year-old division, Grayson Thomas of Greenfield won the boys’ title, while McKenzie Scribner of Orange won the girls’ crown. In the boys’ 10-year-old division, Jaziah Joel Marrero captured the title. In the 11-year-old division, Lily Mom-Uch of Athol won the girls’ bracket, while Ben Kearney of Athol won the boys’ side. In the 12-year-old division, Madison Liimatainen of Turners Falls won the girls’ title, and Caleb Thomas of Greenfield won the boys’ crown. Aiden Saviski of Athol captured the 13-year-old boys’ title.

Winners of the Western Mass. Championship will compete for the state title at Boston College on April 6. 

Pioneer 7/8 in title game

Josh Wood scored 13 points in the second half and finished with a game-high 20 points to lead Pioneer to a 53-48 upset over top-seeded Chicopee in the semifinals of the CBI Division in the grades 7 & 8 Suburban League boys basketball playoffs at the Stefanik School in Chicopee.

Pioneer advanced to this weekend’s championship game on Saturday but is still awaiting its opponent, time and place.

Sam Glazier had 13 points in the win and led the team in rebounding. Jake Brook chipped in 10 points, and Sean Turner added 6.

Softball

GGSL registrations

The Greenfield Girls Softball League will hold registrations for the upcoming season on Saturday from 9 a.m. until noon at the Elks Lodge of Greenfield.

The league is open to all girls, not just those living in Greenfield. There will be an additional registration period on March 16 from 9 a.m. until noon also at the Elks Lodge of Greenfield.

Registrations for the 2019 Greenfield Minor League baseball season will take place Saturday and again on March 16 from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. upstairs at the Greenfield Elks Lodge.

Coaching clinic at Frontier

A youth baseball coaching clinic hosted by Frontier’s Chris Williams and Pioneer’s Jordan Branson will be held April 14 from noon until 2:30 p.m. at the Frontier Regional School gymnasium in South Deerfield.

The cost of the clinic is $10.

Coach Williams will focus on structuring practices to maximize repetitions so kids improve and perform consistently, keeping it fun, and keeping kids accountable.

Coach Branson will focus on evaluation and improvement of individual hitting, pitching, and fielding – finding strengths but also how to help kids improve technique and attitude.

GHS football Meat Raffle

The Greenfield High School football team will hold its third annual “Meat Raffle” on April 6 at 6 p.m. the Elks Lodge of Greenfield.

The benefit features $1,400 worth of meat and seafood prizes, which will be raffled off individually throughout the night. There will also be additional raffles from local merchants. 

Admission to the event is free.

Pioneer softball coaches sought
