GREENFIELD – In a playoff type atmosphere to end the regular season, the Greenfield High School girls basketball team lost to Taconic 55-52 Wednesday night.

A soft jumper by Raegan Hickey with under two minutes to play gave the Green Wave (17-3) a one-point lead but the Braves got baskets on their next two possessions to seal the game.

“We scheduled it this way for a reason,” Greenfield coach John Hickey said. “We knew they were going to be pretty good. We were thinking it’s one and done tonight. But we didn’t make plays when we needed to and they did.”

A clutch jumper from Taconic’s Ciany Conyers from just inside the 3-point line gave the Braves a three-point lead with 14 seconds left.

It was senior night at Greenfield  and the Wave honored Samantha Smith, Hickey and Olivia Joy before the game.

“We will go as far as they take us,” Hickey said of his seniors. “But they will be missed for sure.”

Greenfield had a chance to tie the game but a deep 3-pointer missed.

“We had opportunities,” Hickey said. “The ball didn’t go in.”

Smith had 18 points for Greenfield, and Hickey scored nine. Smith had four fouls in the fourth quarter which limited her defense aggressiveness.

Katie Haselton scored 16 points for the Wave, including three 3-pointers. The game went back and fourth in the final frame with seven lead changes before the Braves took the lead for good.

Greenfield’s offense slowed down in the third quarter allowing the Braves to go into the fourth leading 43-42.

Both teams played man-to-man in the second and the offense slowed down until the end of the quarter when Smith began to assert herself.

Smith had 10 points in the second quarter alone and added an empathic block that got the Wave student section in a frenzy.

Greenfield’s offense looked fluid to start the game. Haselton moving without the ball on hard basket cuts gave the Green Wave two easy baskets.

Smith found Haselton on a nice pass from the high post on the baseline.

Haselton added a 3-pointer to make the score 18-11 when the Braves had scored on consecutive possessions.

Although the Braves ended the first quarter on a 7-0 run when their defense began to force some turnovers.
