We are seniors, disabled and very low income. The library directly affects us. The city has assured us that our taxes would not increase from a new library. Why would we not take advantage of this excellent opportunity?
Most, if not all, the money that is being pledged for the new library will not be able to be used to renovate the current library. The much needed renovations to the current library would cost just about as much as Greenfield’s contribution to a new library. Renovations would not be practical – but accessibility is needed one way or another.
All children (and adults) would have access to materials, internet connection, information and new technology with a new library. It would also be a draw to the downtown and to new families and businesses moving into Greenfield.
On a related issue: Anyone can make a mis-statement. It is what happens next that determines people’s character. Responsible people will own up to their words. They are less concerned about how they are feeling and more about how the other is feeling especially when the other belongs to a protected class (disabled, people of color, low income etc). Cityi Couincilor Verne Sund seems to feel attacked but doesn’t seem concerned that others feel attacked by him.
It does concern us that Sund does not have time to respond to people who have contacted him. Apparently, he has no interest in going to the library to read and answer email. That does make us wonder why he would want to remain councilor. Apparently, he has time for doing other good volunteer work— great – but why not focus on that and allow someone to be a counselor who has time for the City Council job.
Please join us in supporting a new library.
