Prescribe the Y Program: Prescribe the Y is a 12-week doctor-referred wellness program that has helped hundreds of local people develop an exercise program to help them have less pain, better health and more energy. Ask your primary care provider for a referral for a free 30-minute consultation with a Y fitness specialist. The specialist will help determine the best Y program/activity for you. The cost of the 12-week program is $139; financial aid is also available to cover up to 70 percent of the fee. The Y coaches monitor everyone’s attendance and make reminder calls to help people complete the program. Very few people are too old, too frail or too heavy not to be successful in Prescribe the Y (also known as RxY). Those interested should call 413-773-3646, ext. 448, for more information or ask their PCP for a referral.
Diabetes Care Program for Type II Diabetics: A comprehensive diet, exercise and education program for people who have been diagnosed with Type II Diabetes. Many Type II Diabetics can reduce the amount of medication they need to take through exercise and diet. The Y staff will help you. For more information call Dawn at 413-773-3646, x428. The program consists of three basic small group exercise classes per week, weekly weigh-ins, initial body measurements, food journaling and healthy eating presentations. It is held in the private Fit Life Center. Classes are Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 4 p.m.; or 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.; and Saturdays from 10 to 11 a.m. Eight weeks of classes are free for Y members and $99 for program associates and non-members.
Free Y information sessions: Tuesday at 10 a.m. and Wednesday at 6 p.m., a Y staff member will be available for a one-hour Y information session. The session includes a tour, presentation on Y programs and a question and answer time. The Y’s program guide describes all of the programs, but this session will help potential members better understand the many options available for adults and families. If these times are not convenient, call Dawn Dorsey at 413-773-3646, ext. 428, to schedule a tour.
