Claire Morenon in her recent My Turn column, documents the devastating effects of climate change to farmers throughout Massachusetts. Her solution is adaptation; new systems and urging government and corporations to “aggressively prioritize strategies to limit and slow climate change.” Good luck with that.
Government officials are elected and paid quite well to bring wealth and prosperity to their constituents. Time was when a politician promised a “chicken in every pot.” Now, it is “high speed internet in every home.” We need more casinos they say, and better rail service to get there. These are the things that produce heroes in government; not a promise of better weather. Corporations exist to generate wealth and prosperity for themselves and their stockholders. They possess zero interest in sacrificing that for better maple syrup; dryer hay and healthier pumpkins. Starve them out, however, and you’ll see a rapid change.
Back in the day, the popular hippy slogan was: “Live simply so others can simply live.” I am not a hippy — never was — but I cannot argue against sound logic.
