GREENFIELD — Turners Falls Road is closed to through-traffic, probably until the end of January, while the Green Bridge over the upper canal in Turners Falls is being repaired, but litter and household trash were still being dumped on the road late last week.
By Friday, the white trash bags were gone, and Greenfield Public Works employees may have helped clean it up on routine runs, department Director Marlo Warner said, although the department didn’t receive any calls about it.
The Green Bridge was closed on Wednesday, Jan. 9, for the repairs that are being done by the state Department of Transportation. The contractor, MIG Corporation, is installing a new bridge deck and repairing railings on the bridge. The “White Bridge,” via Turners Falls Road over the Connecticut River, will remain open up to the Fifth Street Bridge for local access only.
Town Administrator Steve Ellis said similarly to when repairs were made to the “White Bridge,” while the Fifth Street Bridge is closed, all traffic will be detoured to Route 2A and Route 2 in Greenfield, Avenue A in Turners Falls and to the Gill-Turners Falls Bridge.
