It was a night that Tim Artus and the Franklin County Technical School boys basketball team would sooner forget.

The Eagles had a miserable night shooting the basketball and suffered a 57-55 loss to Duggan Academy in a Tri-County League North Division game in Turners Falls.

Duggan outscored the Eagles, 6-4, in the extra frame to win. Franklin Tech had a look to win it as time expired. For the night, Franklin Tech shot 4-for-16 from the free throw line, and 23-for-78 from the field.

“Just had a tough night shooting,” Artus began. “We got a lot of good looks, we just struggled to make shots.”

Despite the Eagles’ struggles from the field and the free throw line, the team’s defense helped force the overtime as it limited Duggan to 51 points through the end of regulation.

“The worked hard all game, defensively, and had it right there. Defense was not the issue,” Artus said. “I like our chances any time we can keep a team in the 50s. We are not going to shoot this poorly every night.”

Ty’Von Alston led Duggan with 20 points, and Marcel Greene netted 13 points.

Garret Cole finished with 12 points, 16 rebounds and four steals, and Marcus Sanders had 12 points, five assists, five rebounds and one steal. Sim Maniatty had 8 points, Max Charest finished with 7, and Jared Vielmetti-Perusse added 6.

Smith Academy 54, Greenfield 49 — Despite a chance to take the lead, Greenfield could not make a shot down the stretch and the Green Wave suffered a 54-49 loss to Smith Academy in a HL North game Monday night at Nichols Gymnasium in Greenfield.

The Green Wave trailed 50-49 with two minutes remaining and during that time Greenfield coach Angelo Thomas said his team had six different chances to tie the game.

“They were point blank chances,” Thomas lamented.

Smith Academy (4-6) came out and shot six 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 30-22 lead at the break. Greenfield (6-3) did a better job guarding the perimeter in the second half and clawed their way back into the game but were unable to get over the hump. Hunter Campbell finished with 19 points for the Green Wave, but Thomas said he was disappointed with his team’s hesitancy to pull the trigger.

“They are kind of hesitant to shoot,” the coach began. “Everyone is sort of even, and we need someone to step up and take that shot.”

While the Green Wave did struggle on offense, Thomas pleased with his team’s effort on the defensive end.

“It wasn’t for lack of trying. We were busting our butts on defense.”

Julius Brewington finished with 10 points in the loss, Jared Hart netted 7 points, and Owen Phelps notched 6.

Brett Gratz led Smith Academy with 18 points. Jack Zygmont netted 17 points, and Carter Woodward scored 15.

Thomas and the Green Wave face Thomas’ former team, Hopkins Academy, Wednesday night at 7 in Greenfield.

Pioneer 66, Hopkins 45 — Pioneer turned in its best defensive performance of the season as it routed Hopkins Academy, 66-45, in a HL South game Monday at Messer Gymnasium in Northfield.

Pioneer held a 30-20 lead at halftime and then outscored Hopkins 20-5 in the third quarter to take a 50-25 lead into the fourth. Hopkins hit six 3-pointers in the fourth to nearly double its offensive output from the first three quarters but still lost by 19.

“Defensively, that was the best we’ve looked all year,” Pioneer coach Scott Thayer said. “The intensity and the ball awareness off the ball was tremendous. We were picking off passes, creating turnovers, and that got us out on the break and got the ball moving better.”

Garrett Cote hit six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 22 points to go with six assists to lead the Pioneer offense. The Panthers had a big night passing the ball, as they finished with 18 assists on 25 field goals.

“We shared the ball, especially in the third quarter, the ball was really moving,” Thayer said.

Zack Fox finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, and Troy Emond had 8 points. Jared Hubbard had 6 points, seven rebounds and six assists, and Ryan Underwood added 6 points. Jacob Fuller had 2 points and seven rebounds.

Justin Ciaglo led Hopkins with 15 points.

Frontier 72, Mohawk 26 — Seven players scored at least five points for Frontier on Monday night and the Red Hawks defeated Mohawk, 72-26, in HL North action at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.

Carsten Carey had a big night for Frontier on offense with 20 points, but no other player had more than 11 as the Hawks spread the ball around. Owen Morse netted 11 points, and Peter Carey had 7 points and seven assists. Kalen Evans added 7 points, Gabe Gochinski and Zach Nuerminger each had 6 points, and Brett Robinson added 5 points.

“When the ball doesn’t stick, and we swing it from one side of the mid-line to the other, we get a lot of great shots,” Frontier coach Ben Barshefsky said. “We did a good job attacking the high post tonight.”

Owen Cross led Mohawk with 11 points.

Mahar 67, Belchertown 55 — With the game on the line late, Mahar turned to its interior offense. The trio of Desean Watson, Eli Gonzalez and Jacob Carron rose to the occasion, and the Senators wound up with a 67-55 win over Belchertown in Hampshire League South action Monday in Belchertown.

“They came up with some big hoops late to finish them off,” said Mahar coach Chad Softic of the trio.

The Senators (7-3, 3-2) led by just four points entering the fourth quarter, but used a 25-17 edge in the final stanza to seal the deal and move above the .500 mark in league play.

Jordan Desrosiers had another big offensive night, finishing with 17 points including four 3-pointers. Charlie Barnes notched his third straight double-digit game with 13 points, while Gonzalez and Watson made it four players in double figures with 10 points apiece. Carron tossed in 8 points.

“At (7-3), we’re pretty happy,” said Softic. “We’re plugging along right now. It hasn’t been perfect but we’re making progress.”

Belchertown (2-7, 0-4) was led by Nathan Wright’s 17 points.
