Another week, another accolade for Amy O’Sullivan.
The Greenfield native completed her sweep of MASCAC Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Week awards for the 2018 season, earning the award for the seventh time this fall thanks to another impressive performance a week ago.
The Westfield State University freshman was the top rookie among MASCAC members at the NCAA Division III New England regional meet, held in Brunswick, Maine.
Consistently the Owls’ top finisher in 2018, O’Sullivan covered the women’s 6-kilometer course in a time of 23 minutes, 44 seconds, finishing 87th overall. The MASCAC Rookie of the Year, she won the award each week in which Westfield State competed.
Westfield State wrapped up its season with a 23rd-place team finish on Saturday.
GMTFL semifinals
Pat Viencek connected with Jeremy Benz for the game-winning conversion in double overtime to lift top-seeded Between The Uprights to a 19-18 win over No. 4 Sirum in the semifinals of the Greenfield Men’s Touch Football League playoffs Sunday at Green River Park.
Tied 6-6 after regulation, BTU’s Cody Underwood caught a touchdown pass from Viencek, only to have Sirum tie the game when Parker Hickey caught a TD from Teddy Parker.
In double OT, Hickey scored a touchdown, but Benz caught the tying score from Viencek and notched the game-winning conversion to seal the deal.
In the other semifinal, No. 2 Travel Kuz also needed two overtimes to get past third-seeded Rocketfusion.com, 6-0.
With the game on the line, Travel Kuz quarterback Jon Hall hit Adam Bastarache from 3 yards out for the winning touchdown to send the team through to this weekend’s championship against BTU.
Defensive stalwarts on both sides of the ball were Tyson Dowdy (INT), Justin Fox (INT), Frank Stumpo and Shane Andrews.
RVAL XC championship
Two Franklin County runners finished in the top 10 in the nine-team River Valley Athletic League cross country championship meet held at Greylock Glen in Adams.
Academy at Charlemont’s Will Draxler led the way. The Heath resident finished eighth overall in the boys race with a time of 20:55.
Four Rivers Charter School’s Jayden Skelly, of Shelburne, finished 10th in 21:20 for the challenging 5K course with over 500-feet of elevation.
