Stoneleigh-Burnham School made things interesting as it cut a three-goal second-half deficit down to one but was unable to come all the way back as it fell to Dublin School, 3-2, in the finals of the River Valley Athletic League Girls Tournament championship game Sunday afternoon in Greenfield.

Dublin led 2-0 at halftime and scored the first goal of the second half to take a 3-0 lead but the Owls began to work their way back late. Avdeep Kaup scored on a direct kick from 30 yards out to get the Owls on the board with 15 minutes to play, and four minutes later Olivia Young buried a penalty kick to pull the Owls to within one at 3-2.

SBS pressured the rest of the way but Dublin hung on to win the RVAL title.

In the boys’ championship game, Eagle Hill and Putney played to a 3-3 tie through regulation and overtime before Eagle Hill won in penalty kicks, 5-4.

Bulldogs advance to Super Bowl

Davian Bala scored on a 15-yard touchdown run on third down in double overtime to send the Franklin County Bulldogs to the Suburban League Peewee Division Super Bowl with a 20-14 win over South Hadley in a semifinal game Sunday morning at Whitney Park in Ludlow.

Franklin County will face Northampton in the Super Bowl Saturday morning in East Longmeadow.

Bala’s game-winning run finished off a memorable day for the running back as he rushed for 105 yards, three touchdowns and a 2-point conversion. Gavin Arsenault rushed for 69 yards in the win, and Jaxon Silva added 21 rushing yards.

The Bulldogs’ defensive unit played well in the win. D’Angelo Brown and Owen Hill each finished with five tackles, while Arsenault and Oliver Swanger-Sartz each made four tackles. Bala made three tackles and also had an interception and recovered a fumble, while Jonathan Ainsworth made three tackles and recovered a fumble. Kaleb Pezzuto finished with three tackles, and Brayden Slauenwhite, Silva, Dustin Reade and Corbin Conway finished with two tackles apiece.

Youth hockey

Dillon’s ties Westfield

Sam Knight had one goal and one assist on Sunday as Franklin County Hockey Association Dillon Chevrolet tied Westfield, 2-2, in a Greater Springfield League Bantam Division game at Amelia Park Arena in Westfield.

Matt Lavoine had a goal for Dillon’s, and Trevor Kuchieski had one assist. Trevor Parkinson made 30 saves in goal, and Dylan Archer, Hunter Smith, Eathon Bryant and Jayson Smith all played well on defense.

Midgets split

Adam Savoy scored twice on Saturday as the FCHA Gilmore & Farrell Insurance hockey team edged Pioneer Valley, 4-3, in a Greater Springfield League Midget Division game.

Kyle Barnes and Porter Clancy each had a goal in the win, and Mike McGoldrick had a pair of helpers.

Jake Croteau and Colin Byrnes played well offensively, while Nick French and Jacob Bryant shored up the defense. 

• On Sunday, Bryant scored the lone goal for Gilmore & Farrell during a 5-1 loss to Brattleboro.

Conner Clough,  Clancy, Aurel Pydych, and Zack Aldrich played well in the loss.

FCHA Peewees fall

Brady Booska made 31 saves on Sunday but FCHA Gilmore & Farrell fell to Pioneer Valley, 11-0, in a GSL Peewee game at Collins-Moylan Arena in Greenfield.

Golf

Luippold ace

The golf season may be drawing to a close but Brian Luippold is glad he hasn’t yet packed away the clubs for the winter.

The Greenfield resident registered his first career hole in one on Sunday as he aced the 145-yard, second hole at the Country Club of Greenfield.

Luippold used a 5-iron to register the ace, which was witnessed by Jim Worden, Gordon Parker and Norm Morris.

Deerfield results

The Deerfield Academy football team scored the first 21 points of the game on Saturday and went on to defeat Cheshire Academy, 34-14, in Deerfield.

The Big Green (6-2) led 21-7 at halftime.

The Big Green boys soccer team improved to 5-7-4 on the season with a 0-0 tie against Williston, Saturday in Easthampton.

The Deerfield girls volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to Taft, Saturday in Deerfield.

On Sunday, the Deerfield field hockey team suffered a rare loss with a 1-0 setback to Greenwich Academy in Deerfield.

The loss was just the second of the year for the Big Green, which fell to 10-2-1.

The girls soccer team also fell by a score of 1-0 on Sunday to Hotchkiss.
