BUCKLAND – A chicken-and-biscuits dinner takes place Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Mary Lyon Church on Upper Street, with proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. On the menu is chicken and gravy with biscuits, mashed potatoes, squash, peas, cabbage salad, homemade bread, apple cake with ice cream sauce, cider and coffee. SHELBURNE – Hager Farm Market’s annual Pumpkin Smash is Saturday, Nov. 3, and its a way to say goodbye to your Halloween jack-o-lantern. Bring your pumpkins to smash for a worthy cause: to benefit local 4-H youth programs in Franklin County.
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hager’s will drop the pumpkins off a scissor lift, with a cash prize and trophy for the pumpkin that smashes farthest. There are also raffle prizes donated by local businesses.
This “smash” is held in partnership with Bear Country 95.3 and WHAI 98.3. Local vendors will provide samples of their products, local 4-H clubs will be here with activities for children, pumpkin pies and treats and of course fried dough with maple cream too.
SHELBURNE – On Monday, Nov. 5, the town Highway Department will be picking up bags of autumn leaves curbside in Shelburne Falls, weather permitting, for Shelburne residents living between South Maple Street and the Deerfield River. Bagged leaves should be left curbside by 7 a.m.
Community spelling bee Nov. 15
BUCKLAND – Dust off your dictionaries and prepare to be spellbound for the 13th annual Mary Lyon Foundation Spelling Bee on Thursday, Nov. 15, in the Mohawk Trail Regional High School auditorium. This is the day when teams of three costumed people vie against other teams for spelling championship and best costume.
Community members of all ages are invited to form teams or help fill established teams. The teams are sponsored by community groups. This year, Clark’s Corvair and Greenfield Savings Bank are the “Queen Bee Sponsors” of this event, which generally raises about $7,000 for education programs throughout West County schools.
Spelling Bee spectators get free admission, free refreshments, and a chance to compete for raffles and a door prize as they cheer on the spellers.
