CHARLEMONT – Jonathan “Jay” Healy and Charles Ricko III will compete for an open Selectboard seat in the town’s special election on Tuesday, Nov. 6. Healy is a former 20-year legislator and was state secretary of agriculture for five years. Healy’s late father and brother both served as selectmen in town. Ricko is a retired police officer and the owner of Outwatch Outpost sporting goods shop on Main Street.
The deadline for candidates to file nomination papers to run for the one-year, unexpired selectboard seat was Monday. A Meet-the-Candidates night is being planned for early next week.
Both the state General Election and Charlemont’s special election will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 6, with the polls open at Hawlemont Regional School from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Absentee ballots are now available from the town clerk’s office during regular business hours, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.
CHARLEMONT – Right-of-way agents from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) will be in town through the first week of November, to continue research on a traffic-calming plan for Route 2/Main Street. A $7.1 million roadway reconstruction with traffic-calming features may start construction in the spring.
According to plans, the project is to include road work and sidewalk reconstruction, drainage, sidewalks and wheelchair-accessible curb-cut ramps. There is also to be crosswalk enhancements, improved signage and landscaping.
