GREENFIELD — Sometimes you don’t know what you’ll get, even from those who always give, until you ask.
About 400 books can now be bought for children in the area due to $765 in donations made at the tables of the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce breakfast Friday.
The chamber breakfast gathering recognized the United Way of Franklin County, as it continues to move forward in the early stages of its annual campaign that this year has a $750,000 goal.
“Overall our message was it’s not a money goal, it’s a people goal,” United Way Executive Director Kelly Brigham-Steiner said afterward. “It’s about reaching more people and building partnerships with them.”
The books will be for the United Way literacy program “Read Learn Succeed” that brings volunteers to classrooms all around the county and after they finish reading a book, they give out a copy of the book to every student. The 400 books is enough for a one-month program.
“It is easy for me to share statistics, and there are many, but we together must not lose sight of what can be done to increase health, safety and well-being for our children, youth, families and citizens,” Brigham-Steiner said in her speech to the chamber.
She said she’s been feeling a “different level of engagement and enthusiasm, and it’s just really great to see.”
