Frontier Regional School boys soccer coach Evan Horton said he saw it immediately. There wasn’t much his team could do to stop it.
Hampshire Regional’s Grady Fern scored the only goal of the game with just four minutes left in regulation, lifting a perfectly-placed shot from 25 yards out into the back of the net to send the Red Raiders to a 1-0 victory over Frontier in an independent contest Thursday night under the lights in South Deerfield.
“It was a beautiful shot,” explained Horton of Fern’s goal. “The second he hit it, I knew there was nothing (Frontier goalie Peter) Bronke could do about it.”
Bronke made three saves on the night, but Fern’s goal, with an assist coming from Aidan White was the only shot of the night to get by either keeper.
“We dominated the first half, I thought, but similar to the Southwick game, we just could not find a way to score,” Horton admitted.
Frontier fell to 4-3-1 overall with the defeat. The Red Hawks head on the road to play at Monson Tuesday.
Pioneer 6, Smith Academy 0 — Garrett Cote scored twice in the first half and Jack Loud buried a pair in the second half as visiting Pioneer blanked Smith Academy, 6-0, in McGrath Division play Thursday night in Hatfield.
Noah Keith and Jacob Quinn also found the back of the net, helping the Panthers improve to 4-1 overall, 3-1 in the McGrath.
Felix Pruitt-Dahl set up two of the Pioneer goals with assists, while Keith and Cote also notched helpers.
The Panthers outshot Smith, 22-3, and Pioneer keeper Ryan Underwood recorded three saves to pick up the shutout.
FC Tech 3, Hampden Charter 0 — Tony Barilone set the tone with a goal late in the first half, and visiting Franklin Tech tacked on two more after intermission to stay perfect in the Tri-County League with a 3-0 shutout of Hampden Charter Thursday afternoon at Rivers Park in Chicopee.
Jovanni Ruggiano and Reuben Galvez found the back of the net in the second half, adding some insurance for the Eagles (6-1, 5-0).
Galvez assisted on two goals and Barilone notched an assist on the Galvez tally. Grayson Funk recorded 2 saves for the shutout.
“We’re still struggling with our shot selection a bit,” admitted Franklin Tech coach Kurt Richardson. “We just have to play within ourselves better moving forward.”
Franklin Tech hosts Duggan Academy on Monday.
Smith Voke 6, FC Tech 0 — Karlie Petlock, Megan Cone and Marissa Meyhew scored two goals apiece, and visiting Smith Voke played well under the lights in Turners Falls en route to a 6-0 victory over Franklin Tech in an independent girls soccer game Thursday.
The Vikings (2-2-1) led 3-0 at halftime and duplicated the feat in the second half. Meyhew tallied two assists to go with her two goals, while Petlock and Cone each had an assist to finish with three points apiece.
Smith Voke outshot Franklin Tech by a 14-10 margin. Eagles goalie Emily Merritt recorded eight saves in the loss.
Franklin Tech, which fell to 2-4-1 overall, is right back at it today against winless Commerce.
