Carsten Carey streaked across the finish line in 18 minutes, 15 seconds and Frontier defeated Greenfield, 21-36, in a Pioneer North Division boys cross country meet Thursday at Highland Park in Greenfield.
Greenfield’s Tyssen LaBombard broke up a string of four Frontier runners in the top five as he finished second in 19:24. After that it was all Red Hawks. Peter Carey came in third in 19:36, George Balis was fourth in 20:06, and Gehrig Brynda was fifth in 20:08.
The Green Wave took the next two spots as Andy Bostrom was sixth in 20:31, and Dylan Badillo was seventh in 21:16, but Phaelon Koski was eighth in 21:24 to finish off the Frontier victory.
Hopkins 27, Mahar 30
Mahar 26, McCann Tech 31 — Thor Mead finished second overall and was one of four Mahar runners to crack the top 10 as the Senators earned a Pioneer North split Thursday in North Adams.
Mead was second in the race in 17:43, while teammate Connor Vallencourt was third in 18:06. Ed Bennington finished seventh in 20:06, and Alex Plotner was 10th in 20:32.
Mohawk 19, Pioneer 36 — Dennis Simmons continued his strong freshman campaign, as he dusted the field Thursday to help Mohawk defeat Pioneer, 19-36, in a Pioneer North boys cross country meet in Buckland.
Simmons traversed the 2.55-mile course in 15:53, besting the field by nearly a full minute. Guy Rice-Lesure was second in 16:49, while fellow Mohawk harrier Sean O’Dean nabbed third place in 17:02.
Pioneer’s Noah deRuiter was the top finisher for his squad, taking fourth place overall in 18:31. Jacob Walker was sixth overall in 19:14 and Brian Bodenstein was right behind in seventh place (19:16).
Pioneer does not have enough runners to score on the girls side, but the Mohawk girls still ran on Thursday. Meghan Davis was the first one through in 15:53, followed by Erica Szewczyk (18:07), Erika Looman (19:50), Caitlin Upton (21:26) and Savannah Simmons (21:32).
Frontier 21, Greenfield 40 — Frontier had seven of the top 10 runners on Thursday to get past Greenfield, 21-40, in a Pioneer North girls cross country meet in Greenfield.
Louisa Calame of Greenfield won the race in 23:15 but Frontier placed the next four runners. Angelina Egland was the first Frontier runner across the line as she came in second overall in 23:40. Marisela Ackerman was third in 24:18, Marie Diemand was was fourth in 24:30, and Leah Gump was fifth in 24:56.
Kandace Lu came in sixth for the Green Wave in 25:15, while Eva Howland was seventh in 25:23 for Frontier, Fiona Howes was eighth in 25:26, and Emily Laus was ninth in 25:39.
Mohawk 3, Athol 0 — Octavia Crawford put down seven kills and Ashley Reynolds dished out 16 assists to propel Mohawk to a 25-11, 26-24, 25-12 sweep of Athol in a Northern Division girls volleyball match Thursday night in Buckland.
Reynolds served up six aces and added three digs and two kills for the Warriors (2-6, 1-1), while Crawford added a pair of assists and an ace.
Julia Massey and Jordan Rice had four kills apiece in the victory. Kayla Martin had three kills and a trio of digs, while Elly Patnode (two kills, eight aces, two assists), Lydia Sargent (one kill), Alex Lilly (one kill, two aces) and Barrett Lieberman (one kill) all aided the cause for Mohawk.
Athol fell to 0-9 overall, 0-3 in the North.
Frontier 3, Amherst 1 — Lauren Davenport had 15 kills and six digs on Thursday night and Frontier defeated Amherst 25-19, 25-21, 21-25, 25-12, in an Eastern Division girls volleyball match at “Pack the House” night at Goodnow Gymnasium in South Deerfield.
All proceeds from the evening went to benefit Javan Fox, an Athol junior varsity player who was struck by a truck over the summer and remains in the hospital.
Olivia Deane had 11 kills, three kills and three digs for Frontier (9-1), Ashley Telega finished with four kills, four aces and three digs, and Elizabeth Fuqua had 27 assists and 10 digs. Olivia Rosewarne added eight assists and five digs.
“We made a bunch of hitting errors at the end of the game,” Frontier coach Sean MacDonald said. “I keep saying to them that I want to see the team that says it wants to win a state championship. I want to see that team. The girls know that we are not where we need to be right now.”
Turners 16, Easthampton 8 — The bottom of the lineup came through in a big way for Turners Falls Thursday afternoon.
Brian Poirier shot 44, Aidan Bailey carded a 45 and Tyler Noyes fired a 46 in the Nos. 4, 5 and 6 spots respectively, and the trio swept 12 points in their three matches to earn a 16-8 victory over Easthampton in a Bi-County East golf match at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club.
Bailey birded the par 3 7th hole to help the Thunder (5-2, 3-2).
Joey Mosca shot 51 at No. 2, while Alex Sulda carded a 52 at No. 3 and Brady Booska followed with a 53 at No. 1. All six of the Turners golfers scored points toward the team total.
Frontier 24, Hopkins 0 — Five of the team’s six starters broke 40, as it was another dominant effort from Frontier en route to a 24-0 victory over Hopkins in a Suburban West golf match Thursday at Cherry Hill Golf Course in Amherst.
Mikey Corduff was the match medalist with a 32, setting the tone in the No. 1 spot for the Red Hawks (6-0, 4-0). Behind Corduff, Bryan Baumann shot 37 at No. 2 while Kalen Evans carded a 38 in the No. 4 hole. Rowan Blair and Porter Clancy both shot 39s in the Nos. 5 and 6 holes, showcasing Frontier’s outstanding depth. Gunnar Moore rounded things out with a 41 at No. 3.
Monson 18½, Greenfield 5½ — Danny Provost won 3½ points in his match at No. 4, firing a round of 50, but visiting Greenfield dropped an 18½-5½ decision to Monson in a Bi-County East showdown between top teams Thursday at Quaboag Country Club.
Ryan Cote posted the low round of the day for the Green Wave (5-2, 5-2), earning a point at No. 1 thanks to a 45. Cam Baird scored the other point for Greenfield at No. 5 where he shot 53.
Gabe Larouche (50), Jake Cote (53) and Dylan Archer (64) also competed for the visitors. Monson improved to 6-1 on the year.
FC Tech 22, Sabis 2 — Mike McGoldrick and Nate Pelletier shared medalist honors, as the Franklin Tech golfers each carded a round of 42 to help their team thump Sabis, 22-2, in a Bi-County West golf match Thursday at East Mountain Country Club in Westfield.
The duo combined for take all eight points in the top two spots of the lineup for the Eagles (4-1, 4-0).
Mike Patnode made it three Tech golfers under 50, as he shot 47 and won two points in the No. 3 hole. Ryan Artus (50), Jacob Shaw (52) and Anthony Zager (56) combined to sweep 12 points in the bottom three spots for the Eagles.
Mohawk 21½, Central 2½ — Will Guyette was the match medalist in the No. 1 spot in the lineup, as Mohawk got back into the win column Thursday thanks to a convincing 21½-2½ victory over Central in a Bi-County West contest at Veterans Memorial Golf Course in Springfield.
Guyette won all four points in his match against Central’s Angela Huang, helping the Warriors improve to 5-4 overall, 5-2 in the Bi-County West.
Triston LaCross shot 51 at No. 2 and also swept four points for Mohawk. Andy Robertson (55) and Ben Thompson (59) also broke 60 and combined for 7½ out of 8 points in the Nos. 3 and 4 slots.
