Kidleidoscope Fridays: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Come each week to learn about our wildlife neighbors who share our home in the Connecticut River Watershed. Upcoming topics include moose on Sept. 28. Kidleidoscope is a free child-friendly, hands-on environmental experience for young children. Connecticut River Conservancy
Source to Sea Cleanup: Sept. 29, various times and locations. The annual fall trash cleanup of the Connecticut River includes rivers, streams, parks and trails. All ages and abilities can volunteer at places of their choice along the four-state watershed. Starts at the Greenfield Swimming Area on Nash’s Mill Road at 9 a.m. with a quick sign-in, snack and safety talk. Volunteers with trucks who can work after lunch to haul and sort collected trash are especially needed, but no special vehicle is needed to join the cleanup. Clean up on foot or by boat. Weekday cleanups can also be scheduled for interested school groups the week before Sept. 29. Pre- and post-cleanup events include food, live music and even river-themed brews. Great River Challenge Off-Road Triathlon: Sept. 30, 8:45 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Paddle 5 miles on the river, run a 4-mile course on trails, followed by a 7-mile bike to the summit and a descent to the finish line. Sanctioned by USAT (USA Triathlon) in the non-traditional category. Northfield Mountain’s trails and river frontage provide a scenic backdrop for this challenging course. Options include solo, two-, three- and four-person teams, as well as recreational, family and junior categories. Benefits the Northfield Kiwanis Club’s scholarship fund. Programs are held at Earthlands, 73 Glasheen Road in Petersham.
■“The 24-Hour Experience”: Oct. 7 and 8. An outdoor adventure program that spans the full cycle of one day and night to build confidence, interpret the natural and cultural history of the land, and build group cohesiveness. Based on a concept developed by Larry Buell, a co-leader of the program.
■“Semester on Earth”: Starting Oct. 30. A semester-long program of Earth-based living and learning.
