GREENFIELD — Eight-year-old Savien Canedy had quite the story to tell his friends when he got to school Thursday morning.

Around 8 a.m. Thursday, Diana Canedy was getting her son ready for school at 278 Deerfield St. when she heard tires screeching and then a loud bang. Then Savien, who was near a window, told her he just saw a car come careening through their side yard — narrowly missing a fire hydrant and road sign — through a wire livestock fence and a chainlink fence, and down the embankment into the Green River, which is swollen from recent rains.

Canedy called 911 and went out to help a dazed but uninjured woman up the 20-foot embankment from her gray Acura SUV that had landed nose first in the river.

This was all the result of a two-car accident at the intersection of Washington Street and Deerfield Street. The other car was driven by a man who was also uninjured.

Greenfield police and fire departments responded along with Koch’s Automotive, which was tasked with pulling the car back up the embankment, using two wreckers in the process. No fluids appear to have leaked into the Green River. The accident is under investigation.
