Road closure planned

NORTHFIELD — Gulf Road will be closed on Wednesday from 8 a.m. likely until the end of the day. A detour will be arranged by the Highway Department.

The closure is for the construction of a new culvert, being built in preparation for the road to be repaved in mid-October, Highway Superintendent Tom Walker said.

Northfield’s new fire tanker being shown at county fair

NORTHFIELD — A tanker truck that the Northfield Fire Department and volunteers spent more than a year refurbishing will be shown at the Franklin County Fair in Greenfield from Thursday through Sunday.

Northfield received the tanker truck through a military surplus program as a replacement for an older tanker the town had. The new truck was previously used for fighting forest fires.

The truck is all-wheel drive and carries 1,250 gallons of water. Refurbishments included painting and weatherizing the truck, revamping its hydraulic system and adding a hose reel and a tool box.

About 2,000 hours of labor went into the project, said Fire Chief Floyd “Skip” Dunnell. The total costs were about $3,000. Purchasing a truck would have cost about $150,000, Dunnell said.

Observations on a bird observatory

NORTHFIELD — Cory Ross will talk about his experiences working at Thunder Cape Bird Observatory on Lake Superior in Ontario, Canada, at the Northfield Dickinson Memorial Library on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Thunder Cape Bird Observatory helps to track population trends, particularly in birds that breed in remote northern areas that would be difficult to track otherwise. Ross works as a field technician and bird bander.

The event is co-sponsored by the Northfield Bird Club and the library.
