Field hockey

Murdock 2, Athol 1 — A pair of first-half goals propelled Murdock past Athol, 2-1, in the season-opening field hockey game Tuesday in Winchendon.

Murdock scored less than four minutes into the game and Emily Smith then made it 2-0 in favor of the hosts with 13 minutes, 16 seconds to play in the first half.

The tide turned in the second half as Athol stepped up. The Red Raiders made it a one-goal game with 16:35 to play when Ashley Rouleau scored from Christa Cucchi. Despite several quality chances, the Red Raiders were unable to get the equalizer. Coach Emily Hall was pleased with her team’s second-half performance.

“We played much better in the second half,” she began. “We were able to stop them from scoring, which was wonderful. We got a lot of shots off, we just couldn’t get it in the net.”

Ryley Pond made 13 saves for Athol, and Abby Kirwan played well defensively.

Athol travels to Franklin Tech Friday afternoon.
