BUCKLAND — The Buckland Historical Society’s two history museums will both be open Sunday, Aug. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m.
The Historical Society Museum, 20 Upper St., is a former schoolhouse that now houses three floors of artifacts and town records.
The Wilder Homestead, at 129 Route 112, is a furnished 1775 saltbox home with five fireplaces, and a 1779 English barn furnished with a barn-sized weaving loom.
COLRAIN — At least 100 people braved heavy rains for a pig roast at Pine Hill Orchards that raised $3,700 toward replacing a barn destroyed by a freak windstorm.
The event was organized by Brady McElaney of Pine Hill Orchard, with Scranton’s Pig Roast cooking the pork. At least 13 businesses and community members also donated items for a raffle.
A large wooden barn under construction by Scott Roberts at DAR-Ridge Farm was blown off its foundation by a windstorm in June, killing a few of the pigs sheltered inside. The building was not yet insured because construction work wasn’t complete, the family said. Among those donating raffle prizes or food were: Greenfield Farmers Coop, Black Birch Vineyards, Fred Call, Gilmore & Farrell Insurance, Dots of Wilmington, Catamount Country Store, Adaptive Sports at Mount Snow, Ciesluks Farm Stand, Squash Trucking, the Sullivan and Shearer families, McElaney and Shirley Valeski.
A GoFundMe campaign, set up for the Roberts family, is trying to raise $50,000 to complete the barn before winter sets in.
