GREENFIELD — A fire likely stemming from a turtle terrarium left a Forbes Court home full of smoke and the family displaced for the time being.

When Greenfield firefighters arrived around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, they found a turtle tank with a melted air pump on it, which Capt. John Whitney said was probably the cause of the fire. Whitney and his crew also found two turtles, who were doing all right despite the chaos around them.

The fire was put out in about an hour, both turtles were saved — placed in fresh water and under the care of a neighbor — and the family spent the night elsewhere while the home was treated for excess smoke. Whitney said the family should be able to move back once its cleaned up and safe to live in again.
