DEEFIELD — Between 10 to 12 Thayer Street residents were evacuated Thursday morning after an asphalt milling machine on the road hit and broke an unmarked, 1-inch gas valve below the pavement.

The incident occurred at 7:24 a.m., according to Deerfield Police Sgt. Harry Ruddock. Police and South Deerfield Fire Department responded, along with police officers from Sunderland and Whately. Berkshire Gas Co. was there by 7:35 a.m., to plug the gas line.

The road was temporarily closed and residents were evacuated as a precaution, Ruddock said. The road was re-opened by 8:35 a.m. and residents were able to return home.
