AMHERST — A man from Leverett has been charged in the non-fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man in Amherst.

Amherst Police said they were called at 2:47 p.m. Monday to the area of 826 North Pleasant St., where a man was shot in his right leg.

Police said the man is from Amherst, and that he was transported to Baystate Medical Center by the Amherst Fire Department where he is being treated. The injury is not life-threatening, police said.

After a short investigation detectives arrested Kalop P. Shetrawski, police said. Shetrawski, 24, of Levrett has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (firearm) and unlawful possession of a firearm.

Police say that Shetrawski is being held at the Hampshire County House of Correction in lieu of $25,000 cash bail, and that he is expected to be arraigned in Eastern Hampshire District Court today.

Police say that the incident remains under investigation, and that it was an isolated incident that poses no danger to the public.
