ERVING — Two people were sent to the hospital following a head-on collision on Route 2 Tuesday at 11:35 p.m.
Both vehicles caught fire and were completely charred, according to Erving Police Chief Christopher Blair.
According to Blair, a 17-year-old Warwick man in a Ford Mustang was driving west on Route 2 by Farley Flats when an animal entered the road. The driver swerved into the other lane, crashing head-on into a Ford Fusion driven by a 21-year-old Orange woman.
Blair said the woman was seriously injured and two people passing by pulled her from the vehicle.
Because of weather conditions, the woman was unable to be LifeFlighted, Blair said, so she was taken to UMass Medical Center’s Trauma Unit in Worcester.
The man who had been driving the Mustang sustained minor injuries and was transported to Baystate Franklin Medical Center. He has since been released.
Both airbags deployed and both parties were wearing seat belts, which saved their lives, Blair said.
Route 2 was closed until 2:30 a.m. Wednesday and the Erving Fire Department provided assistance.
Blair said the crash is under investigation with help from the Massachusetts State Police CPAC unit.
