Youth Track & Field: For Mondays until Aug. 13, the Y is offering a track and field program for 3- to 16-year-olds. The program meets at Mohawk High School on its rubberized track. The events are age appropriate with 50 to 200 meter sprints, mile run, long jump, shot put (ball throw), discus, etc. See Page 6 of the summer “Brochure” at ymcaingreenfield.org for details. The nightly fee is $5 per child; register at the track each night.
Camp Apex for ages 5-14: Camp Apex is the Y’s outdoor camp located just three miles west of the rotary on Peckville Road. The camp facility is top notch with a solar heated pool, nature center, craft building, modern bathhouse, two picnic shelters, archery, sports field, obstacle course, hiking trails, gentle stream and more. The camp operates through Aug. 24 with weekly themes and several specialty themes. The camp is for boys and girls ages 5-14 (5-year-olds who have completed kindergarten); kids are divided into groups by age. The camp has an overall ratio of eight kids per staff member. 2018-19 Program Brochure: The September-October Program Brochure will be available by Aug. 3. The 28-page brochure has a complete listing of over 150 classes and programs for youth and adults. Registration for facility members begins Aug. 6 and all others can register starting Aug. 13. Youth classes include swimming, gymnastics, soccer, Parkour, before/after school child care and full-day preschool. Adult classes include Diabetes Care Program, water therapy, water fitness, YMCA Diabetes Prevention Program and more. See “Brochure” at ymcaingreenfield.org or pick up a copy at the YMCA.
Before/After School Child Care: The Y provides before- and after-school child care for K-6 graders from Greenfield, Turners and Gill. Before-school care happens in the Y’s game room and Kid Fit Center with easy drop-off at the Y’s rear entrance. After school-care children use the game room, Kid Fit center, basketball court for daily P.E. and the social room for homework. Parents can also add swimming lessons for an extra fee. Half-day Camps: The Y offers morning and afternoon gymnastics and sports camps July 23-Aug. 17 for 6- to 12-year-olds. The morning camps run from 9 a.m. to noon or 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the afternoon camps from noon to 4 p.m. As a great intro, Gymnastics camp provides rotations through floor exercise, bars, beams and vault. Sports camp offerings are recess games, Gaga and dodge ball and flag football. Both afternoon camps also have a recreational swim time. See “Camps” at ymcaingreenfield.org or call 773-3646, ext. 0. These camps are a fun way to end the summer.
Diabetes Prevention Program: A new session starts Thursday, July 26. In the YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program, a trained lifestyle coach introduces topics in a small classroom setting and encourage participants as they explore how healthy eating, physical activity and behavior changes can benefit their health. The 12-month group-based program consists of 16 core sessions, followed by monthly maintenance sessions led by a trained lifestyle coach who facilitates a small group of people with similar goals. Free Y membership for attendance participation. A federal grant my cover up to 100 percent of the fee if income eligible; for example, single person income less than $17,000 per year and family of three, $29,000 or less. The Y’s Sliding Fee Scale is also available which can cover 20-70 percent of the fee. Full Day Preschool: The Y is taking registrations for the 2018-19 school year. There are two air-conditioned classrooms, an outdoor play area, weekly swim and gymnastics lessons and daily P.E. School hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; also available is early care from 6:30-8:30 a.m. and late care from 3:30-5:30 p.m. The preschool meets on snow days as well.
