Conway’s Jack Vecellio put together quite a weekend at the 29th Annual Needham Youth Classic.
The 14-year-old won the heptathlon in the two-day event at the DeFazio Track, besting the field in the grueling competition that features the javelin, high hurdles, 800 meters, long jump, 100 meters, high jump and 400 meters.
In addition to winning heptathlon championship, Vecellio was third in the open shot put and took second in the 50-meter sprint.
Vecellio continues a busy summer Aug. 4-5 at the 10th Annual Jersey Jumps Beach Vault in Seaside Heights, N.J.
The Needham Youth Classic had its start in 1989 at Memorial Field in Needham and has become the largest open youth outdoor track and field meet in the Northeastern U.S. The meet provides an opportunity for children to compete against the best in running and field events. The two-day meet comprises over 20 events for age 2-14.400 plus in attendance. Nearly 400 high school, college, and elite level pole vaulters flocked to the beach for the two-day event, which saw three pits used in conjunction with homemade runways laying on top of the sand.
CFC Senior
Tim Rice’s two-round total of 142 was more than enough to lift him to a Senior Club Championship title over the weekend at Crumpin-Fox Club in Bernardston.
Rice shot rounds of 72 and 70, giving him the title by nine strokes. Erik Barnes and Tom Bergeron tied for second at 151.
Bob Bergeron was the overall net champion, winning a tiebreaker after totaling 133 (66-67). Jeff Merkle was the runner-up with an identical 133, followed by Jordan Haskell at 135 in third place.
Terry Boyce was the women’s champion with a total of 174 (84-90). Marty Stinson was the overall net champion at 147 (72-75).
Northfield club
Jesse Morgan shot a two-round total of 134 to take home the club championship at Northfield Golf Course over the weekend.
Morgan posted rounds of 64 and 70 to seal the deal and take home the title.
Matt Llewelyn was the net club champion with a low total of 137 after rounds of 66 and 71.
200 Club
The team of Zack Bitzer, Ellen Bitzer, Wayne Borkowski, Paul French and Dawn Bete posted a winning score of 57, leading the way at the 200 Club Tournament Saturday at the Country Club of Greenfield.
Beacon Classic
The West County Cider Beacon Clay Court Classic men’s singles tennis tournament has been postponed due to rain in the forecast for the upcoming week.
The new date for the beginning of the event is Aug. 6 at 5:30 p.m. at the Beacon Courts on Sanderson St.
All matches will be best two out of three sets with a 12-point tiebreaker. The tournament is single elimination, and players must start play by 5:30 each day or be subject to default. Players may arrive early for warm-up.
