Another strong round from Jonathan Elkins has him right in contention at the American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) Hub Championship.

The South Deerfield resident shot an even-par 72 on Wednesday, leaving him in a tie for third place after two rounds at the Country Club of Halifax.

Elkins is 1-over through two rounds, with today’s third and final round on the docket. His two-round total of 145 has him tied for third with Maine’s Cole Anderson and David Rogers of Needham. All three players are five shots back of leader Chris Fosdick of Middlefield, Conn., who enters Round 3 at 4-under par. First-round leader Adam Xiao is one shot back in second place at 3-under.

Elkins used an eagle on the par 5 9th hole to propel him to the even par round on Wednesday. He was 2-under on his front 9, adding a birdie at No. 2, before shooting 2-over 38 on the back 9. He birdied the 10th hole while dropping shots with bogeys on Nos. 11, 12 and 15.

A rising junior at Taft School in Watertown, Conn., Elkins is participating in his fourth career AJGA event. His best finish came at last year’s Killington Junior Golf Championship in Vermont where he tied for 14th place.

Booska likely done at
New England Am

It was an up-and-down Wednesday at the 89th New England Amateur Championship for Cody Booska.

The Turners Falls resident got off to a great start, finishing the final seven holes of his Round 1 after it was halted due to severe weather on Tuesday. He birdied two holes on the back 9 to card a 1-under 69 that put him in a tie for ninth place entering Round 2.

Things unraveled in the afternoon, however. A pair of double-bogeys plagued the second round of his tournament, and he shot a 7-over, 77 that put him at 6-over, 146 overall. With the event being shortened from four rounds to three due to the weather issues, only the top 40 players were set to advance to the third and final round today. Not everyone in the field finished their second rounds Wednesday, but Booska was in a tie for 57th place and unlikely to advance.

Maine’s Reese McFarlane leads the tournament at 6-under, while Patrick Frodigh of Dedham is two strokes back at 4-under.

In the Boys Scramble Division, two teams tied for first place with a 1-over 37. The teams of Dylan Archer and Gabe Mota along with Chris Vadnais and Mason Harper led the way, while Brayden Fennessy and Daniel O’Connor were third at 3-over 39.
