Longmeadow may have been hoping to put on an offensive fireworks display on the day before the Fourth of July, but Greenfield Post 81 pitcher Joel Peabody had other plans.
Peabody allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings and Greenfield rolled into the holiday break with a 3-0 victory Tuesday night in Longmeadow.
Post 81 (8-2-1) improved to 3-0-1 during a stretch of four games in four days leading into today’s one day break for the Fourth. Greenfield resumes its busy schedule on Thursday when it turns around to host Longmeadow at Veterans Memorial Field in Greenfield at 7 p.m. That begins a three games in three days stretch that includes a Friday night home game against Post 81’s fiercest competition atop Zone B in Northampton, and concludes Saturday at 5 p.m. at Jachym Field in Westfield against Post 124.
Skipper of Post 81 Kyle Phelps said he is pleased with the way his team has played throughout the season and he is really seeing his players come together as the team enters the final seven games of the regular season.
“Tonight was a big win. Longmeadow just won the Division I western Mass. championship, and that team was many of the same players,” the coach began. “We are happy where we are right now. I think the team is starting to gel, guys are starting to develop roles, and that’s a big part of it. Guys are accepting roles.”
Peabody was largely responsible for Tuesday’s win, as he not only allowed just two hits — a pair of singles to Mike Barrett — he also did not walk any batters. As if that was not enough, he also struck out 10, including the final batter of the game to complete the shutout.
“Joel was dominant today,” Phelps said. “He moved the ball around the strike zone and kept them off balance all game. And he got stronger as the game went on.”
Greenfield gave the pitcher a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Owen MacPhee led off with a single. He stole second and moved to third on an overthrow before scoring on Ben Arnold’s one-out RBI single.
The score remained that way until the sixth when Greenfield tacked on two more runs off of Longmeadow starting pitcher Jerold Duquette, who picked up the loss. Colin Cloutier led off with a walk and pinch-runner Garrett DeForest moved to second on a passed ball before stealing third. MacPhee then walked and stole second to set the table for Luke Viens, who lined a two-run single to left over the leaping third baseman.
MacPhee finished with two hits, while Connor Waitkus, Viens and Arnold each had one.
“Luke came through with the big hit of the night,” Phelps said. “For the most part, our bats were quiet, but we got timely hits when when needed them.”
Duquette struck out six and walked two in six innings.
The win moved Post 81 into first place with 17 points, one point ahead of Northampton, although Northampton has one game in hand. Westfield sits in third place with 14 points and also has one game in hand on Greenfield.
The top two teams in the Zone get a bye through the opening round of the tournament.
