Brayden Thayer tossed three strong innings and had three hits and three runs scored at the plate, and Greenfield smacked two grand slams in the fourth inning to bust things open en route to a 16-4 victory over Frontier in Game 2 of the teams’ best-of-three Cal Ripken 11U District II championship series Friday night at Lunt Field in Greenfield.
The Greenfield All-Stars finished off the sweep after winning Game 1 in Whately earlier in the week. Both teams still advance to the double-elimination Cal Ripken State Tournament, set to begin Friday night in Hudson and Bolton. Frontier opens its state tourney with a game against North Middlesex at 5:30, followed at 7:45 by Greenfield against Ashburnham/Westminster.
Frontier cut a 6-0 deficit to 6-4 with a strong third inning at the plate. Greenfield saved its best offense for the fourth inning, when the hosts clubbed two grand slams as part of a 10-run inning to busted things open. Hugh Cyhowski and Braeden Tsipenyuk tallied the grand salamis, and the duo combined for 12 RBIs in the victory.
Devin Dubie had two doubles and two RBIs for Greenfield, while Jackson Campbell and Ethan Quinn combined for four hits, three RBIs and seven runs scored. Ten of Greenfield’s 11 batters recorded at least one hit in the win.
Frontier’s Harry Laflamme threw the ball well for his team, tossing the first three innings. He added a hit and a run scored, while James Lavallee had a hit, two RBIs and a run. Kaden James and Owen Babb both had hits, with Babb recording several outstanding defensive plays at shortstop.
Mickey Mantle
Offense proved hard to come by for Hilltown Hardwood Flooring Diamond Dawgs Friday night, as the squad managed just four hits in a 6-1 loss to Dalton in a Pioneer Valley Youth Baseball League Mickey Mantle baseball game at Pine Grove Park.
Cam Baird, Kyle Devlin, Matt Pollen and Max Leh had the four hits for the Diamond Dawgs, with Leh’s double driving in Devlin for the team’s lone run in the top of the seventh inning.
Devlin took the loss on the mound, striking out four in four innings of work. Tim Fritz tossed a scoreless inning of relief to help the cause.
The Dawgs fell to 3-5 overall, and they’ll look to bounce back Thursday with a home game against Amherst at 5:30 p.m.
Elks League
Through nine weeks of the Country Club of Greenfield’s Elks Golf League, the team of Aaron Campbell and Tim Gochinski occupy the No. 1 spot in the standings with 51 points. Two weeks remain in the regular season. The top eight teams earn playoff spots.
