Jenna Silk split a pair of matches Tuesday to wind up as the women’s champion of the Greenfield Tennis Cup.

The recent Greenfield High School graduate, who played No. 2 singles for the Green Wave this spring, defeated Emilia Seaver, 6-3, and fell to Lilly Seaver, 6-4, to finish 3-1 overall in round-robin action and secure the top spot in the two-day women’s event at the Beacon Field Courts.

Lilly Seaver, who also graduated this spring after playing No. 1 singles for Mohawk Trail Regional High School, wound up second with a 2-2 overall mark. She beat Silk Tuesday but fell to sister Emilia, 7-5.

Emilia Seaver split her two matches Tuesday to finish 1-3 overall.

In men’s semifinal action Tuesday, a pair of tight matches saw Matt Howell and Kyle Maroni advance to meet in tonight’s championship, set for 5:30 p.m. at Beacon Field.

Howell defeated Chris Seaver, 3-6, 7-6, 6-4, in one semifinal, while Maroni was a 7-5, 7-6 winner over Jesse Lucas in the other semi.

Youth softball

14U Suburban League

Taylor Murphy was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Emily Young had two hits, including a triple, and an RBI of her own to help the Turners Falls Invaders to an 8-3 victory over West Springfield in a 14-and-under Suburban League fast-pitch softball game Tuesday night at Mittineague Park in West Springfield.

Mackenzie Martel doubled and drove in two runs for Turners, which improved to 2-0 on the young season. Brooke Thayer tossed three scoreless innings to start the game before Young finished up over the final four frames.

• Elsewhere, Frontier Blue put together a wild comeback, scoring nine runs in the sixth inning to edge the Athol Softball Devils, 13-12, in 14U action at Murphy Park in Greenfield.

Marlee Higgins led Frontier Blue with three hits, while Gabby Dyjack, Izzy Palmisano, Jillian Apanell, and Jessica Markowski all doubled. Lucy Howard and Maria Konieczny each had two hits. Apanell and Markowski combined in the pitching circle for Frontier.

Riley Polana, Lindsey Leblanc, Hailey Chencueth, Sammie Keniff, and Amy Vallencourt each had two hits for Athol.

Golf

CCG Tuesday Ladies

Teresa Varner posted the low gross in the First Division with a 36 as the Country Club of Greenfield’s 18-Hole Division held a crossover tournament on Tuesday.

There was a three-way tie for low net (29½) between Kathie Fahey, Carol Ruggeri and Elise Rice.

Anne McHugh won the low gross with a 42 in the Second Division, while the net winners were Michele Hazlett, Dianne Wood and Linda Lively all at 31.

Matt’s Men’s League

Matt Betsold posted the low-gross 39 to top the field at Tuesday’s Matt’s Men’s League played at Thomas Memorial Golf & Country Club in Turners Falls.

Don Mailloux’s 26 was good enough for the low net score.

Charlie McCracken was closest to the pin on No. 7 (16 feet, 7 inches), while Ken Adams was closest on No. 9 (19-1).

Edge Hill Men’s

Bill Buck’s plus-3 point quota toppled the field in the A Division at Tuesday’s Edge Hill Golf Course’s Men’s League in Shelburne Falls.

Buck’s big night included the low gross (36) and closest to the pin on No. 16 (5-8). Greg Bergeron had the low net in the A Division at 32.

In B Division action, Butch Whitson shot 40 for low-gross honors and had the top point quota at 7½. Charles Duchin was closest on No. 16 (16-4) and Skip Heddens totaled the low net at 33.

Ashfield Ladies

Donna Forgie led the pack with a total of 36, pacing the Five O’Clock Ladies League at the Ashfield Community Golf Course Monday night.

The game of the night was ‘Throw out holes 5 and 7,’ and three women tied for second behind Forgie as Barbara Ladd, Katie Benedetti and Diane O’Connell all shot 38. Francie Hall had the low putt total of the round with 16.

DRIVE boys’ varsity

Kalen Evans scored 17 points to send Frontier to a 54-30 victory over Franklin County Tech in a DRIVE League boys’ varsity basketball game Monday night at Stoneleigh Burnham School in Greenfield.

Franklin Tech’s Garrett Cole paced his team with eight points.

• Elsewhere, Gabe Lawson’s 15 points powered Monadnock to a 56-46 win over Greenfield.

Hunter Campbell was Greenfield’s leading scorer with nine points, followed by Mason Meadows with eight.

• In other action, Noah Timmer poured in 21 points to help Keene to a 61-35 victory over Brattleboro.

Greg Fitzgerald had nine points for Brattleboro.

Greenfield Co-Rec

Mike Cole smashed two home runs, including a grand slam, and finished with three hits to help The Hangar Pub & Grille to a 14-4 win over Silver Screen Design in a Greenfield Co-Rec Adult Softball League game Tuesday night at Green River Field.

Duane Rivard had four hits and three RBIs for The Hangar, which also received two hits from Brian Winslow and Kelsey Cadran and one hit from Liz Gagnon.

Silver Screen received home runs from Juan Rivera and Chris Quiles, while Tara Deleo tallied a hit.

• Elsewhere, Eric Bastarache hit for the cycle as part of a 4-for-5 night in Taylor’s Tavern’s 16-6 win over Riff’s North at Green River Field.

Cody Chapin was 3-for-5 with a pair of home runs for Taylor’s, while teammate Sara Taylor had three hits, including a double.

Matt Orrell and Katherine Scarbrough were both 3-for-4 in the loss for Riff’s.

• In other action, Mitch Mailloux clubbed a trio of home runs and slashed eight RBIs to help Smitty’s Pub knock off The Outlaws, 23-17, at Greenfield Middle School.

Bree Richotte had four hits for the winners, including a home run, while Alan Mailloux had three hits, including a home run, and Grace Ahrensdorf totaled four hits, including a pair of two-baggers, and three RBIs.

The Outlaws received five hits from Colton Yezierski and four hits from Nikki St. Hilaire.

PV Women’s League

Taylor Boutwell celebrated her birthday in fine fashion Tuesday night.

Boutwell smacked a go-ahead grand slam in the third inning, lifting Ashfield to an 8-5 win over Conway in Pioneer Valley Women’s Softball League action.

Ashfield also received two hits each from Samantha Davis and Rachel Sheehan, with Sheehan contributing a triple.

Conway’s Kristin Ouellette was 2-for-4, as was teammate Kara Fagan, who added an RBI.

Road race

Montague Mug

The 38th annual Montague Mug Race will be held Aug. 19 at 8:30 a.m. from the Village Common in Montague.

The race is 5½ miles and pewter mugs will be awarded to the top male and female finishers, while coffee mugs will be awarded to the top finishers in each division.

T-shirts will be given to the first 90 registrants.

The 2-mile Mini Mug race, now in its 14th year, will take place at 8:35.
