GREENFIELD — A local convenience store has sold its first million-dollar lottery ticket to a lucky Greenfield resident this week.
New Inkwell News on Federal Street sold the winning ticket June 2 to Jessica Wyckoff of Greenfield.
Zain Naveed, who sold the scratch-off ticket, said Wyckoff came in Monday believing she had won a $10,000 prize. She left the store and started to read over the ticket again and realized that she may have won the million-dollar prize instead, so she turned around and came back. She cashed the prize on Wednesday, said Naveed.
The ticket was a $10 “$2,000,000 50X Cashword,” which offers the opportunity of up to a $2 million prize. According to Lisa McDonald of the Massachusetts State Lottery, 22 of the 31 $1 million tickets have been claimed so far, and 11 of the 15 $2 million tickets have been claimed.
“It’s certainly one of our more popular games,” McDonald said. “We’ve put out a bunch over the years.”
Not only is Wyckoff now a millionaire, but the store will receive a $10,000 bonus for its special sale. Naveed expects money to go back into the business and hopes it will help during the winter, when sales can be tough.
New Inkwell News has been in a bit of a winning streak this week, too. Naveed said $1,111,000 in prizes have been sold in the past six days. On Wednesday, someone won $10,000 from a $10 ticket, and earlier in the week, a $2 ticket yielded a $100,000 jackpot. Then, another person won $1,000 from a $5 ticket, he said.
Before this million-dollar ticket, the store’s biggest win was a half-million prize on a $5 ticket in 2014, Naveed added.
“We’re pretty excited because it’s the first one million we sold,” said Naveed, who encourages the curious public to check out the winning ticket’s picture on the New Inkwell News Facebook page.
