ORANGE — A parachutist died Monday from injuries received when she struck a barn Saturday, according to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office.
The parachutist — identified as Alexis Zayas, 27, of Long Island, New York — died after she “veered off course” and struck a barn on South Main Street Saturday, according to Northwestern District Attorney spokeswoman Mary Carey. The DA’s state police investigators and the Orange Police Department are investigating.
A press statement from Carey said the victim was transported to Athol Hospital following the crash, before being transferred to UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
According to Adam Klimpp from the Orange Municipal Airport, no incident was reported on airport property Saturday.
He referred the Recorder to Jumptown Skydiving, a skydiving center that provides services for skydiving out of Orange Municipal Airport. Jumptown Skydiving is operated by the nonprofit organization Massachusetts Sport Parachute Club, according to its website.
Kevin Drivas, general manager for Jumptown Skydiving, said Monday the incident is “still under investigation” and that Jumptown does not have a comment.
