ORANGE — The four-mile stretch of Route 2 between Orange and Athol will be closed this evening, beginning at 8 p.m.

According to a post on the Orange Police Department’s Facebook page, the section is between Exit 16 (Daniel Shays Highway, or Route 202, in Orange) and Exit 17 (Route 32 in Athol), and will be closed to allow work on the highway’s overhead signboards.

The road is scheduled to be reopened at 4 a.m. tomorrow.

The Orange Police Department said drivers should allow themselves extra time if traveling in the area, and suggests the following detours:

If traveling east from Orange, take Exit 16 onto Daniel Shays Highway north, then travel for about 2.5 miles and take a right onto Route 2A east. Travel on Route 2A for about five miles before merging back onto Route 2.

If traveling west from Athol, take Exit 17 onto Route 32. Travel north on Route 32 and take a left by Athol High School onto Route 2A west. Take Route 2A for about 3.5 miles before turning left onto Daniel Shays Highway, which will lead back to Route 2.
