GREENFIELD — A car jumped a curb onto the sidewalk, wedging itself in between a building and a truck, causing extensive damage to both Wednesday afternoon.
The Toyota sedan crashed into Tim’s Barber Shop around 1:30 p.m., leaving two panes of glass shattered. It grazed a parking meter and the impact also damaged the back passenger side of a truck parked at the meter.
Greenfield Police Officer Patty West said that the driver was taken home by another officer and was not injured.
“He basically jumped the curb, took out a parking meter and accelerated into the building,” West said.
“He was flying,” said a bystander who asked to not be named, adding that she heard the driver claim his brakes didn’t work. “At least he didn’t hit a person.”
The bystander said she was coming out of the Recovery Project as she looked out the window and saw the crash. She called 911 as she and other bystanders told the single occupant, an older male driver, to stay in the car.
“He hit a good couple of cars coming down here,” she said.
Both of the car’s front tires were bent and flattened from the impact.
Amanda Banas, owner of Atlantis Massage above the barber shop, peeked out of door to investigate the noise she heard.
“I heard a big bang,” she said.
The car was towed away and crews began to sweep up debris from the car and the front of the damaged building. The crash is still under investigation.
