TURNERS FALLS — First-graders at Hillcrest Elementary will learn how to tell stories through art next week thanks to a visiting artist.

The school will host artist, author and teacher Emily Neuburger for a first-grade storytelling workshop Wednesday, May 23, where students will have a chance to participate in a Story Disk Workshop, which allows them to create a colorful and tangible collection of ideas.

Using pictures and words, children will generate storytelling ideas through a short period of guided brainstorming, time to look through Story Disk samples, a demonstration with clear instruction and a closing game where children play with their disks and build collaborative stories.

Neuburger has a special interest in stories, imperfection and experimental art, especially intersecting stories with art. She wrote award-winning books such as “Show Me A Story” and “Journal Sparks” and has been teaching for over 16 years.

She is the art teacher at Swift River Elementary in New Salem and contributes to FamilyFun Magazine.
