Grief Support Groups: Two new adult grief support groups — one for suicide loss and one for men who are grieving — will begin at Brattleboro Area Hospice in April. Both groups are free and will meet at the hospice office at 191 Canal St. The suicide loss support group meets the first and third Thursday of the month from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. in the downstairs kitchen at hospice. This group is for adults who have lost a loved one to suicide. Drop-ins are welcome, but advance registration is appreciated by calling 257-0775, ext. 104. The men’s grief support group will begin on April 11 and will continue meeting the second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in the upstairs meeting room at hospice. Academic Honor: Kimberly Logan of South Deerfield was welcomed into Mortar Board National Honor Society on April 10 at the Western New England University chapter’s annual induction ceremony. Mortar Board is the senior honor society at Western New England University. The society is open to those students who have demonstrated both academic excellence and leadership on campus and in the community. Students in the top 35 percent of the junior class are considered eligible for the society, with the membership being selected by the existing members of the previous year. The Mortar Board Society hopes to recognize student achievement, while also serving as a focal point of planning and collaboration for senior leaders.

Academic Scholarship: The Franklin County Bar Association announced the selection of two winners of the Thomas W. Merrigan Memorial Scholarship for 2017. The scholarships of $1,000 each are awarded to Matthew Carlson and Mateo Rull, both from Frontier Regional High School in South Deerfield. They will receive their awards on Class Night, May 30. The scholarships honor Thomas W. Merrigan who was a zealous legal advocate, writer and believer in the importance of education. The applications were judged on the basis of academic achievement, personal achievement and the quality of their essays on this year’s topic “Separation of Powers: Framework for Freedom.”
