Arthur Fitzpatrick hit a two-run double to put Denny’s Pantry ahead to stay during a 11-8 win over Tognarelli Heating & Cooling in a Greenfield Minor League AAA Division baseball game Sunday afternoon at Lunt Field in Greenfield as the league celebrated Opening Day.
The league held its Opening Day parade Sunday morning, one day after it was scheduled to open on Saturday’s rain-out. The league then had a full slate of games.
Caleb Johnson had two hits and two RBIs for Denny’s, while Dylan Breiwick, Camden Guertin and Aidan Shea each had one hit. Shea struck out the side in the fifth and also pitched the sixth to shut the door.
Kolin Broderick, Aaron Morrissey, Levi Halla, Hayden Girard and Tristan James each had a hit in the loss.
• In other Major Division action, Hugh Cyhowski and George Mercorelli each pitched three innings and combined to strike out five in a two-hit shutout as Smitty’s Pub defeated New Fortune Restaurant, 5-0.
Mercorelli had one hit and two RBIs for Smitty’s, while Tyler Yetter and Kendra Campbell each had a hit and an RBI. Brayden Thayer, Hugh Hart, Cyhowski and Daniel Pena-Chadee chipped in a hit apiece.
Cody Houghton-Miles and Niko Fasulo pitched well for New Fortune, combining for two strikeouts. Joe Kirly and Otis Wagonbek each had one hit.
Both teams made just one error in a clean defensive game.
• Meanwhile, Ryan Pulizari struck out 11 and also went 3-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs to lead Maniatty’s past Gilmore & Farrell, 8-7.
Luca Siano earned the win in relief and struck out three. Mitchell Ryan reached on an error in the bottom of the sixth inning to drive in the game-winning run. Brodie Gagne added two hits, including a double.
Josh Wood blasted a three-run home run in the loss, and Jake Petrin, Jaytson Smith and Bryce Avery all pitched well.
• In other AAA Division play, Hannah Gilbert doubled to drive in Rowan Muzzy with the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Freedom Credit Union defeated Nap’s Auto, 7-6, in a seven-inning game.
Gilbert finished with three hits and two RBIs in the win, and Silas Muzzy struck out five in three innings of relief to earn the win. Chase Zraunig, Rowan Muzzy, and Silas Muzzy each had a hit for Freedom.
Evan Tsipenyuk had two hits and one RBI for Nap’s, and Jayden Hunter chipped in two hits. Also hitting safely for Naps were Malik Moore, Mason Fiorey, Reid Hager, and Bobby Ellis. Hunter pitched well, striking out eight in four innings of relief.
• In AA Division action, Tristan Yagovane had four hits and three RBIs to lead Cohn & Company to a 9-5 win over P&B.
Tommy Cleary had four hits and two RBIs in the win, and Julian James added two hits and two RBIs. Cooper Leger had two hits, and Cleary and Connor Bergeron each pitched well.
Joshua Mauthe had three hits and three RBIs for P&B, while Connor Guertin had two hits and two RBIs. Brandon Therien had a pair of hits, and Hunter Parker, Ethan Facy and Carter Berthiaume each chipped in a hit.
• Finally, Osiah Ballard had three doubles and two singles as Lundgren Honda topped Bobby C’s DJ Service, 16-9.
Gabe Silva had a double and two singles in the win, and Brodie Burke had three hits. Casey Burke had two hits, Ben Johnston doubled, and Bryce Zraunig and Asa Bouchard each had one hit.
Bryce Drowski had three hits, including a double, in the loss, and Brennon Mahoney doubled and singled. Oscar McDonough smacked a double, and Benny Santiago singled.
Mohawk Youth League
Caiden Manning drove in two runs over the weekend and the Buckland/Shelburne Braves tied Colrain, 8-8, in a Mohawk Youth League Minor Division baseball game.
Jack Cusson went 2-for-3 for the Braves.
Luke Anderson had a hit for Colrain. Kayden Taylor played well behind the plate.
Half-marathon results
Shelburne’s Dan Smith ran a pace of 5 minutes, 58 seconds per mile to finish the Western Massachusetts Mother’s Day Half Marathon in 1 hour, 17 minutes, 56.9 seconds Sunday morning in Whately.
Northampton’s Carson Poe finished second in 1:22:07, and Michael Centore of Suffield, Conn., finished third in 1:23:09. Ben Whitbeck of Greenfield was fourth in 1:24:05, and David Marchefka of Rye, N.H., was fifth in 1:24:30.
Erin Clotfelter of Amherst won the women’s division and placed eighth overall with a time of 1:28:48. Eileen Jenkins of East Longmeadow was second in 1:32:44, and Jen Scalise-Marinofs of Framingham was third in 1:34:36. Elena Musiak of Easthampton was fourth in 1:35:42, and Kate Cardoso of Florence was fifth in 1:35:53.
Volleyball
Northfield Mount Hermon School dropped a 25-20, 18-25, 25-18, 25-13 decision to Phillips Andover Academy in the semifinals of the Prep School Founding Four Boys’ Volleyball Tournament Saturday in Gill.
Phillips Exeter Academy defeated Choate Rosemary Hall in three straight sets in the other semifinal and then went on to top Andover, 17-25, 27-25, 25-20, 25-15 in the championship match.
Tennis
Northfield Mount Hermon School defeated Cushing Academy, 5-0, in a boys’ prep tennis match Saturday in Gill.
The sixth singles match was halted due to rain.
• In other action, the Deerfield Academy boys’ team ran its winning streak to six matches with a 6-1 win over Phillips Exeter Academy Saturday in Exeter, N.H.
Deerfield is now 8-3 on the season.
Water polo
The Deerfield girls’ water polo team defeated both Hopkins School (7-6) and Phillips Andover Academy (6-4) over the weekend in Andover.
Lacrosse
The Deerfield boys’ lacrosse team suffered a 6-3 loss to Avon Old Farms Saturday in Avon, Conn.
Softball
Deerfield dropped a 11-0 decision to Andover in a prep softball match Saturday in Andover.
Baseball
Deerfield dropped both games of a prep baseball doubleheader Saturday in Andover.
The Big Green fell to Andover, 2-1, and 3-1.
UMass softball falls
The University of Massachusetts softball team suffered a 6-4 loss to Fordham in the Atlantic 10 championship game Sunday in Bronx, N.Y.
Lauren Quense hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to give Fordham a 6-0 lead but UMass stormed back with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth. The comeback came up short.
Jena Cozza hit a two-run home run for UMass (35-14) in the fifth inning.
