GREENFIELD — A gas line struck by an excavator in the area of Montague City Road and Southern Avenue led to traffic reroutes, evacuations Thursday morning.

A few residences near the leak had been evacuated for safety precautions. Alternatively, students in the Greenfield Center School nearby were asked to stay indoors to avoid the fumes, according to Greenfield Police Officer Patty West, who was directing traffic away from the scene.

Montague City Road near Cheapside Street was blocked off as of around 10:40 a.m., with traffic being directed back to Cheapside.

West said that the fire chief told patrolmen that the situation is expected to be resolved shortly.
